I've just bought an xbox series s for my sons to play.

It appears that although Fortnite is free to install you need an xbox gold subscription to actually play it. There are three different subscriptions: Gold, Game Pass, and Game Pass Ultimate. I need either Gold or Ultimate to play Fortnite?

With Gold it says you get 2 free games a month. I guess these games are just free for that month - you don't increase your library by 2 games per month so that after a year you've got 24 games?

Will they be able to share a subscription or games if they have 2 logins on the xbox? Or do I need to stick to 1 login. They're members of a Microsoft Family group with me.

Final question... They have Minecraft for PC - I guess if I don't get a game pass subscription I'd need to buy that again for xbox?

Get Ultimate, it's only a few quid more than Gold and you get around 100 games to play and they rotate constantly but not so often that by the time you get into a game it's gone. IIRC Minecraft is available on Ultimate as well.

You only need one Ultimate subscription. I have it setup so that it's on mine and everyone else is a family member.

the 2 free games a month are yours forever, as long as you download them when they are free. You can delete them and download them again at a later date if need be.

As you mention, you need Gold as a minimum to play online.

the other questions seem to have been answered.

Yep, it's something that annoys me too, but Microsoft and Sony now charge for using their online Servers, I guess now I type that, online servers ain't free to build or manage and the likes of Fortnite giving away their monster of a game for free will be a drag.

Bit late now, but they also have a package, although it's not as clean in the UK thanks to our credit laws which includes the hardware too. I think it's £20 a month for a Series S and Game Pass Ultimate.

I think this is only partially true - If you cancel your Gold subscription, I think the free games no longer work. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, as I'm not 100% certain.

CDKeys is usually the cheapest place to "easily" get Gold/Ultimate subscriptions. Although there's there's occasional decent offers that pop up on the XBox dashboard.

Best thing to do is buy 3yrs of Gold then convert it to ultimate for £1 Xbox

I think its a one time thing though (nevr had ultimate either iirc)

Get a gold subscription of cdkeys as above. BEFORE GETTING ULTIMATE.
Get as long amount of months as you can afford up to 36 for the best deal. Apply them to your account.
Then get ultimate in the Microsoft promotion. They will convert existing gold months to ultimate in a special one off promotion.
There's another thread on it somewhere, or check out techradar website, that's where I first saw it. Will try to find a link.

As he said. Faster typing.

How many Xboxes do you have? If just the one, then simplest if you put the sub in your name, and set that Xbox to be your home Xbox. Then anyone logged onto it will be able to use the sub.

If you have more than one Xbox, then the same applies, but you’ll just need to log into any other Xbox at the same time, so others logged on with their own account can use the sub.

Ultimate will also work on PC. In theory. The reality is that it's borked and people can't get it to recognise their subscription. There is also an almighty faff I had to go through to get it just to download stuff when it was working.

The other problem with Ultimate on the PC is that others logged into the PC can’t use your sub like you can on Xbox. I have the sub in our house, but on my son’s Windows 10 laptop, whether I’m logged in or not, it will not let him access Ultimate on his login, only on mine.

Gold is online gaming access. You (typically) get four free games a month as a bonus: two One games and two 360 games. They are yours to keep for as long as your Gold sub is active.

Game Pass is access to a fairly large game library. These sometimes rotate, ie they don't always last for ever and new titles replace them. Worth bearing in mind if you're temped to buy DLC.

Ultimate is a bundle of both of the above.

It's too late now but free to play games will "soon" be no gold required apparently.

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they do away with it altogether as a separate product and just have it as Ultimate or nowt. Games With Gold gets increasingly buried with every system update, it used to be front and centre of the main dashboard and it's squirrelled away in a corner somewhere under the Subscriptions menu now.

We've got gold and game pass, would it make sense to ditch game pass and upgrade to ultimate?

Yes but take the £1 deal. It works out cheaper for ultimate than Gold and Gamepass either way.

I bloody hope so if it means PC can come out of Beta and get a proper working service, it has so much potential (genuinely different model to Steam/GOG/Epic etc.) but at the moment its nigh on unusable.

Stumpy Ultimate is the way to go you get EA play as well which is awesome, also I don't think that £1 conversion always works not for me anyway. Sorry should if first purchase.
