So. The lad decided to use his mini fridge in his room. So plugged it in mains. Then decided to then plug its alternative 5v usb supply lead into his Xbox usb port. So it went dead. No response now when trying to power on and reset etc.
wondering wether to try a new psu?
the fridge is ok though so don’t know what he is moaning about! 😆
anyone else had a similar thing ?
Sounds like it's an x-xbox.
Sorry for your loss.
You could try asking here: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/community/console-games-hardware.23/
If anyone knows, they will know.
The first thing I'd be inclined to do is to throw away the mini-fridge. If you have a multi-meter I'd be curious to see what you measure between the USB ground and the actual ground, as there are some poor quality rectifier designs which effectively put mains voltage on the USB.
I'd be tempted to try a replacement power supply first, because you can always return it if it turns out that this isn't the problem. The replacement is simple but tedious and there are some good guides on how to do it (the iFixit one is pretty good).
Turns out the fridge when plugged into the mains. Has 10volts dc on the USB. So basically shoved 10 volts into the Xbox usb🙄
stripped down the Xbox. The PSU is fine. Some components are toast on the logic board though. So it is going to a specialist to see if they can fix it. So fingers crossed.
thanks for the advice.
A USB fridge peripheral sounds like something Sega would have done for the Dreamcast back in the day. 🤣

So is the fridge's power supply broken, or do they send 10v out of their USB plug intentionally?
USB has power negotiation built into its spec(s). No matter what voltage it is capable of, it should always ask the device it's connected to and then send the correct amount.
I wonder if they have been a bit naughty and plonked a USB plug head onto a normal 10V power supply for some reason.
Fridge is fine.
The USB is for power. If not using mains.
so should not have been plugged into the fridge, and deffo not the Xbox
USB powered fridge? is it CE compliant, or "CE". (China Export)

Sounds like CE in this case means Chinese Explosive.
Hang on.
How is USB-A power output? Inbound power delivery should be USB-B / mini-USB / micro-USB / USB-C. What you're describing shouldn't be possible, USB power is a negotiated protocol and USB-A is the host not the client.
Are you saying that the fridge uses USB-A as a power input socket? That's insane if so, burn it before it burns your house down. Photos would be useful.
Also, what multi21 said.
The Fridge is basically a heat sink and a fan. You can buy them in toy shops. It’s fine.
also Xbox is fixed. Took it to ConsolePortal. They fixed it. Dropped it off Friday afternoon and it was ready Saturday dinner time. Very good service so I will give them a mention. The Lads rainy half term holiday now much better.
now to get back to rebuilding pedals and a front wheel.
No, no it's not! You can 100% buy dodgy and dangerous tatt from toy shops...The Fridge is basically a heat sink and a fan. You can buy them in toy shops. It’s fine.
