Which is the best for a family with young kids?
I like all sorts of games so im sure I'll be happy wit either but is one a better choice for kids around 7yrs old?
I know a Nintendo switch might be better for family games, but I want one that has some good adult games as well so looking mainly at Xbox one or ps4
On PS4 my 5 and 8 year olds enjoy:
Fortnite
Human Fall Flat
Lego Harry Potter
Lego Worlds
Rocket League
Minecraft
Little Big Planet (PS4 exclusive)
Overcooked
And that's all they have got to so far. The 5 year old usually just enjoys watching but he belly laughed continuously actually playing Human Fall Flat with his sister.
Prob very little in it between ps4 and xbox really. Ps4 has a reasonably good indy scene which may make for inter easting kids games. Don't know about xbox. Ps4 controller might be a bit smaller for little hands? Still too big for 5 year old really.
The younglings in my house are 6 & 8, 1 of each flavor.
We got a PS4 for the same reasons earlier in the year and also payed upfront for a years membership to PlayStation now (which me & the Mrs seem to use a lot too)
Both kids love it and mainly play all the Lego games, Minecraft and some of the silly indie games which are good fun.
Another perk of the PS4 (& Xbox I guess) is that the PS4 is far better at using you tube, Netflix etc... than my 'smart' tv.
PlayStation now is £80 up front (more expensive if paid monthly) for the year and there's loads of kids games, a lot of them PS3 classic platformers. For the price of 2 games a year I think it's pretty good value given how many games the kids play on it.
TBH I’d look at Nintendo again. Brilliant kids games, quite a lot of adult titles and when the 2020 fuss over next gen Xbox/PS blows over after release you could pick up a current gen console for buttons
For younger kids it’s hard to beat a s/h Wii U. Backwards compatible with the vast library of Wii games, but also plays pretty modern versions of things like Zelda and Mario games, plus some ace games like Splatoon.
Console can be had for about £70, Wii games and extra controller for buttons.
Buy yourself whichever one has the exclusives you want, with an eye to which platform your kids’ mates are playing on.
PS4 and Xbox both have a great selection of kid games so either will be fine.

That'll be nearer 2022 befoee it blows over.
My kids 7 & I’m not bowled over by games I’d let her play. Bought an Xbox for me selfishly but She’s getting plenty of mileage from my old gamecube
At that age it's an irrelevance. The PS4 has the edge on the One over platform exclusives but not in any practical terms a 7-year old would care about. If you're buying it for yourself under the pretence of "it's for the kids honest" then buy whatever most of your mates have.
If I were you I'd buy them a Wii for thirty quid and get yourself whatever console you actually wanted.

Got back into gaming with a wiiU when my kids reached the same age as the OP - those three games (Zelda BotW, Mariokart 8, and Splatoon) are total quality, huge playability that will last absolutely ages, so agree that a s/h wiiU is defo a good option. The screen controller also works really well IME and is versatile for other stuff.
Have since fallen into the Dark Souls vortex on XBox that I don't see myself escaping any time soon, but still have a family sesh on Mariokart wiiU now and again.
Switch FTW. They're ace! Then a current model whatever when the next whatever comes out.

We did this last year thinking it would get the 9 and 7yr olds to play with their 4yo sister who doesn't yet get the PS4.
Turns out the Wii is pretty rubbish on a modern sized TV. Really difficult to use the pointer bit of the remote on a resolution that is far higher than was normal when it originally came out.
So, they've not really used it that much. A bit of Mario Kart but they struggle with that too and spend a lot of time slammed up against a wall.
We've got both and my 7 year old struggles with the size of the Xbox controllers. The PS4s controllers are more suitably sized for little hands.
Ive got an XBone and a switch. The kids mostly play Minecraft and Lego games on the Xbox but there are plenty othes. If you are starting from scratch look into game pass as the range of games included is excellent. For example gears of war 5 which was released last week is on there. So great value for money. It also plays Xbox 360 titles and 4k Blu rays so factor that in.
The Switch is great though, plenty of family friendly games and few adult games like doom, wolfenstein resident evil etc. Also all loads of SNES and NES games included if you sign up to the £17 a year online service. The games are expensive though especially the afore mentioned adult ones and AAA nintendo titles. The ability to play hand held is awesome, especially for car journeys etc. Better couch (4 player multiplayer) options also.
Haven't spent much time with a PS4 but my old PS3 is still going strong and I prefer the interface to the Xbone. PS4 v Xbox probably come down to which exclusive games you want ( I think the PS4 probably has the edge in this respect)
