Ok I ain’t got a clue about consoles these days so looking for opinions.
My kids are 6 and 8 and they have a switch which they enjoy playing.
A lad at work has just upgraded to a fancy new Xbox and I’m wondering if the kids might use his old one, as a step up from the switch without me spending a fortune.
he said I can have his One S for £100. Might be a game or two but most of his are downloaded and not what my kids would want anyway.
Is it a decent price and worth getting?
I assume it’s not a totally obsolete unit?
I know my lad would play driving games and football
Hi certainly not obsolete and a really good machine does the price include controllers if so seems good based on eBay prices if not I think slightly expensive.
does the price include controllers
Sorry, yes it does. Might be worth a punt then.
I’d need to buy a couple of games but assume they’re available cheaper / secondhand now?
It's probably a little on the high side just for the console. CeX are buying at about £60 and selling for twice that. If there's two controllers included it's likely about right.
It's far from obsolete. Game Pass Ultimate (there's a lengthy thread on this) will net you more driving and football games than they know what to do with for like £4/month.
Maybe try this before buying any games, I have 10 & 15 Year old daughters and not had to purchase any games for ages I absolutely love this (saves me loads)

£1 per sign up for new members (1 Month) there is also a way you can extend period for not much money I will find link.
List of games currently on ultimate, they have Fifa 21 available.
Wowser! Thanks for the replies and the links … £1 for those games has Definetly peaked my interest!
See DrP's post I linked back to. Buying game passes etc direct through the console is almost always the most expensive way of doing so.
Ok thanks. I actually think I’ll just look for fifa / forza going cheap to start with and keep Away from the online stuff for now.
We have a One S and a Series S at home and for many of the games they're equally playable on either console. Sure this changes over time as more games are designed for the new hardware, but armed with Game Pass Ultimate I think it's a worthwhile punt. The only super obvious noticeable thing with the newer consoles is much faster loading times - they don't look or play any different unless you're a super keen gamer.
EDIT Fifa and Forza both play the same to my eye and if you have nothing to compare them to, then they'll deffo look fantastic on an Xbox One S.
We had a One S for years, it's great. Have a Series S now, it loads quicker and yeah visually it's a bit nicer, but it's not as otherworldly as they make out and the lack of disc drive and storage is a pain. Neither a problem with the One S.
The Switch is better for kids than an XBOX one. Buy a couple of new games for the Switch rather than the XBOX.
(I have both the XBOX one and the Switch & my kids are 9 and 11)

This is/was one of my concerns .. are they too young ..
I think there’ll be games they would play , I’ll have to do a bit of research to see what there actually is. I know football and driving games would probably go down well. Just May require practice!

Conversely my daughter has been on the Xbox since she was 6 with no issues. There are plenty of games in the library and I've snagged more than a few decent Gold games for her as well. Xbox store is considerably better value than Nintendo as well.
Good to hear @squirrelking
Well I’ve gone and bought it. It’s Sat under my desk at work all in its original box.
I left all of this behind years ago when I packed my Amiga 500 away so Thanks for the responses - Been a Big help.
happy kids tonight I suspect 😁
Set some Microsoft accounts up on the PC (easier with a keyboard). One for each of you - use free outlook.com or gmail accounts for the kids that you control. Then you can tie them all up using family features with you as the parent / admin. On the Xbox they just need to select their picture when starting (no knowledge of email / password). That way you can add restrictions (if required), set and manage screen time and most importantly their game progress / status will be stored individually for both of them. There’s a lot of emphasis on online controls which might not be relevant initially BUT it’s a lot easier to have unique accounts from the outset as it’s impossible to separate things out with shared accounts.
Of course, there's plenty of games you could play... 😁
What scuttler said (I touched on this earlier). You really want any subscriptions tied to your own account, there are games now with "in-game purchases" and I've heard horror stories.
Yup, all that.
If you start to run out of space then the One S will benefit from an external SSD, I originally went with a 4TB HDD but when it died it got replaced with a 1TB SSD which improved loading times and more importantly hasn't run out of space despite having more than a few big games installed (GTA, Borderlands 2 and Destiny 2).
