We've decided to let our kids join the 21st century and we're going to get them an Xbox one with our tesco vouchers. What do we need?
Kinect is good I hear so we'll do that.
How many extra controllers for friends?
What games are really good for under teen-agers?
What other bits do we need?
I last had a PS 1 so I'm abit out of the loop!

Cheers folks

Did the same last year, Tesco's and all. Did not go for Kinect so dont know if that was a good or bad move but they have not missed it.

Extra controller - two in total seems fine

Got a TV controller - waste, not used it

Bought quite a few games - waste - my son bought what he wanted subsequently and the stuff we got mostly seems redundant.

Friends bring their own, surely?

Kinect is a bit of a gimmick TBH. Hoping to pick up a One at Chrimble so I'll probably get a Kinect separately from Cash Converters at some point; they were going for about £35 last I looked, which is about half the premium you'll pay in a bundle.

If you can I'd either get the 1Tb box or budget for an external USB3 HDD down the line. 500Gb sounds a lot until you realise that a typical game install might run to 50Gb.

The Lego games are great for all ages, and are two-player local co-op. Might be worth grabbing one of those.

Cheaper than cdkeys, it seems. Site looks a bit iffy but I've used EF for years and they've always been flawless.

I'm surprised you parenting skills haven't been discredited yet for daring to spend so much cash on your kids, even if it is vouchers

+1 for cd keys as you need xbl to be able to use the xbox as needed for updates and playing online etc.

Kinect kind of an annoyance now to be honest and not a lot of new games support its full features leave it off the bundle.

Pads two should be fine but to be honest most friends will be on the other side of the headset not in the same room now a days.

Headset a must to keep noise down but you need to buy an adapter (stereo headset adpater) if the headsets dont have one already however the new revised xbox one pads have a 3.5mm jack on the pad allowing the use of any headset or earbuds with a mic.... Except apple ones as they create bad feedback on the mic.

Games

Minecraft for younger kids
Fifa 16
Call of duty (yes its a 18 but most pre teens play it and will get it anyway so all their mates will be playing it too)
Forza 6
Starwars battlefront
Marvel games if theyre a "younger" pre teen
Gta 5 if theyre older

Any external usb 3.0 hdd as the 500gb internal hdd fills up fast with the game installs ive got a 3tb in my ps4 and a 3tb internal on the xb1 and a 5tb external hooked upto my xb1 also average game install takes about 40-80 gb of data.

Xbox one can be hooked up via wifi or cable.. Cable always the best as means a faster connection my wifi a bit iffy on xb1 sometimes.

Cd keys a cheaper way to obtain the gold card for x box live its a website to get it from. Plus in december a lot of xbox 360 games will be free to play via download as a backwards compatibility drive from xbox. Nice touch.

I bought a cheap wireless keyboard with a usb dongle. It saves having to use the controller for typing when searching for TV programmes etc. keyboard was about £10 very handy
Just bought 2 TB hard drive as someone has already said some of the games are big and soon fill the hard drive oz the Xbox.
Also if games are saved to the extra storage device you can connect it to someone else's Xbox when at their house and play your games.

You don't need Gold for updates, you need it for online play and "Games with Gold" freebies.

New updates on the xbox have stopped this for me northcountry boy as it asks for the licences from the original purchaser 🙁 dont know if this is because im a preview member (tester on the new updates and beta software) but sony also clamped down on games sharing since the 3.0 update 🙁

First check what console their friends have. If more have a PS4 then it'll be worth considering getting one of those.

Blimey, there's a lot to learn...

Our big choice is either 1TB without kinect or 500gb with kinect. Lots of confusion here, it's not clear to me how important the kinect is day to day for using the box regardless of the few games that need it...

Help!

I bought my XBone when they were first launched and you had to have Kinect, but haven't attached it since I moved house 20months ago
I miss it logging into my profile automatically (face recognition) and that's about it, the voice commands never really worked that well
If anyone wants my Kinnect they can have it for £25 posted

Don't bother with kinect, waste of time going by my kids behaviours

Get a controller per child, saves arguments...

Use the cd keys website to get your gold.subscription - saves a chunk of change..
