The kids currently have a wii u but there are a few titles of interest that are not available for wii and their chums at skool have egg boxes so I'd like to get them an egg box for Christmas.

Are the only differences with the new model the controller and storage? If so, am I better off getting a better package deal on the old 500gb model?

I don't game anymore so am pretty clueless on the subject of consoles

Ta 🙂

Don't know how old they are, but the standard advice is to get them what their mates at school have, so they can play online together.

Xbox One 500Gb rapidly runs out of space. Install is mandatory and can be anything for 10 to 80Gb. I have around 8 games installed and I'm at 96% full.

Depending on price though the 1Tb console may not be worth it, it's been around £50 to £80 more depending on stockist. The console is USB 3 and will take an external drive and merge in the space easily. Therefore it can be cheaper to get the 500Gb console and a 2Tb external drive.

All depends if you mind the extra wires and what the current deals are.

What allan23 said! Mine is maxed out too, so bought a external drive, works a treat, I just move old game saves to it and keep the internal memory for current games.

here's a great deal for an xbox one atm (comes with forza horizon 2 also) £249.99 from argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3917499.htm

i am planning on getting an xbox one myself and would buy this one if i had the money (as said above you can get an external hdd for extra capacity.

A mate of mine went down the XBox One + USB external hard drive route and seems perfectly happy with it, so unless the 1TB model is well priced that may be a better option.

What everyone else has said.

I'm told that a USB3 HDD is actually faster than the internal drive, too.

Thanks for the help so far.

What about kinetic? Do many of you use it?

It's unlikely I'll use the Xbox, it is primarily for the kids. I was thinking just dance and sport games etc. we had a laugh with the wii board.

Also what about Xbox live. Is this only needed for any online games?

Apologies for the noob questions, it's been a long time since I played games...

Just a point but you can get Xbox360s from Game preowned for under £100 (250Gb) with a year's warranty and many/most games are still available for it and loads available cheap preowned.

Depending on how old they are, they won't care that it's not the latest model

We have the Kinnect and it's ok but it's more of an occassional distraction rather than essential - we got it from cash converters new for £25 which is about what it's worth IMO.

Xbox live Gold is if you want to play online IIRC. You create an account (which is an Xbox live account) but it's free unless you want to play online in which case you pay for gold.

Edit - just noticed the mention that their friends have Xboxs - check whether they're 360 or One then.

I didn't bother with Kinect for Xbox One. Had it on the older 360 and it was clever but ultimately an overpriced gimic as the games were utter garbage.

Not missed it on the Xbox One yet apart from the voice control.

Xbox Live Gold is for online and costs, there's a Silver account which is free but doesn't include the online bit, but there are a few benefits for Gold now. You can get access to some games free and get decent discounts on some download games - almost makes the £39.99 a year worth it.
Xbox Live is linked to an MS ID so you'll need to setup a Microsoft account. It's worth checking the best ways to do this as a family, not sure as I just have the Xbox for me, no kids and the other half hates games.

You can get away without it. I did without for years, you might find the kids will use it to astound you with Call of Duty brilliance and a range of foul mouthed vocabulary you could never imagine possible 🙂

Should have mentioned above, it's best with a damn good internet connection for game updates.

Gold can be had for much less than £40/year. Think I paid something like £26 last time. Well worth it for the freebies even if you never play online. What's your broadband connection like though, is it going to cope with large downloads?

Kinect 2 can be added later if you so desire. CEX sell them online second-hand for £38 which is less than you'll spend with it in a bundle (typically £50-£70), and Nemesis suggests it may be cheaper still in stores like CC.

How old are the kids? I bought an Xbox One a couple of months ago, but struggle to find games suitable for my 6 year old lad. We've exhausted the Lego ones, the only other real options seem to be football or driving ones, neither of which he likes. Most games at the moment seem to be targeted at adults. Can't seem to find the Sonic or Mario type stuff (that shows my age!).

And that's what's good about a 360 if it's workable - cheap games like sonic and most of the Lego ones.

Oh and minecraft. That's the essential...

I didn't get a Kinect for either my 360 or One, but it may appeal to kids more.

A lot of my gaming is in online multiplayer games these days so Xbox Live is a staple for me. Video gaming is generally a much more social thing these days than it was in my childhood when it largely meant playing single player games on an 8 bit computer. Check whether the sorts of games your kids are talking about have large online components - it may be that a lot of the appeal to them is the opportunity to play with or against their friends.
