Anyone got any experience? I'm looking for a v.cheap games console, not really played any games since PS1 yonks back. I am leaning towards xbox 360 S or E (right or wrong?) and there seems to be a glut of 4GB models available. Is 4GB enough? I'll only be playing one game at a time and wont be online or multi-playing or whatever?

Thanks in advance.

Ours is fine, used mostly for DVDs/Netflix and the occasional game now and then. Been thinking about upgrading to the Xbox One ahead of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming out at the end of the year, but need to make sure it'll actually be available on that platform..

The original 360, the S and the E are the same machine for all practical purposes.  You'll be fine with either of those.

Is 4GB enough?

"No" is the short answer.  Even disc-based games require some installation to the internal storage.  It's going to be an annoyance at best.  Of course, there's nothing to stop you buying one and then adding a hard disk, but that's surely going to work out more expensive in the long run.

40GB isn’t a lot, games like GTA4 would be about a 30GB install I think, but you can use external drives on Xboxes for more storage.

All of this is true for the Xbox One, but none of it is true for the 360.  The install for a big game on the 360 will be a couple of GB, not 30.  The Xbox 360 requires a specific drive for the relevant model, you can't just shove an off-the-shelf USB HDD in like you can on the One.

It will.

I am no expert but did a bit of research on this before christmas for my kids and got a 360 E 500gb (i think). €100 for a console that was only about 2 or 3 years old (looked new), 2 controllers and about 7 or 8 games. I cant justify the latest console prices when a new one will be along in a couple of years.

I got the E as it was the last version, lots to chose from as everyone wants an xbox one, was told to avoid 4gb as it just is not enough space, the E did not over heat like other versions(dont think s did either) games are cheap (look at cex for 2nd hand) and loads to pick from (except some of the newest ones). Apparantly the E has one less port for surround sound or something ( but if you are that into it you wont want an old 360 anyway). Anyway my kids are delighted and they keep kicking my ass at FIFA.

The way it's shaping up with both MS and Sony is that the new consoles are evolutions of the current ones, adding things like 4K support.  I think it'll be a good while before a new new console comes out which doesn't work with the old games.  And even then, that doesn't mean the old one stops working - look at the 360!

A used Xbox One can be had for £165.   https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SXB1500GB003   Where you're winning with the 360 isn't the initial console cost but rather that old games can be had for buttons.

I had a 360, with a 12gb(iirc) add on hard drive, was fine for the half dozen or so games I played.

I gave it to my friends twin boys just before xmas as my wife bought me a one s.

360 works just fine, the last time i was in cex they were selling games for £4.

There are only a handful of games with mandatory installation to the HDD. That said I try a game and if I know I'm probably going to play right through it I fully install it (an option for all games) so that the disc drive isn't flogging away all the time.

It's worth looking at the last of the "fat" 360's for a cheap option. Storage space isn't a problem as the HDDs can simply be unclipped and swapped over rather than taking the thing apart and recoding drives which is nothing but hassle and is the only way with the "slim". The later fat models didn't get the "red ring of death" anywhere near as much as the early ones plus they have an HDMI output if that bothers you (component is just as good). But they're still cheaper, because..

Have a look at GBAtemp for a good guide to all the different revisions.

All that said I'm not actually that into the Xbox. It depends on your tastes but the Wii is cheap as cheap and with a bit of easy modding can run emulators for all the 16bit and earlier machines and run Wii/Gamecube games of an external HDD just for fun. There's lots of homebrew software for it and of course lots of Zelda games!
