Yes, I am somewhat "behind the curve" 😀
Yesterday the missus expressed an interest in getting a Wii Fit again, so after a quick look on ebay I mostly ignored her and bought an Xbox 360 with the Kinect thingie instead. It was £46. It'll be some cheap amusement.
What games do I need now ? She wants some kind of fitness thing. She enjoyed things like Crash Bandicoot waaaay back when, and more recently Professor Layton on the Nintendo DS. I enjoyed Fable on the original Xbox and the Uncharted games on Playstation. I'm not a fan of the more intense shooters, e.g. I never got on with Halo. Zero interest in football.
I've already ordered Fable II for the massive cost of £2.99 delivered. What else do I need ?
Psychonauts, excellent puzzley 3D platformer
Portal 1 (Orange Box)
Portal 2
LA Noire
Goldeneye
I refuse to pay for a Gold Live membership so I dont have access to Arcade which is a pity as Ive always wanted to play Braid, but its download only.
Forza Horizon is a chilled drivey game.
Fable 3?
The Mass Effect games are pretty good (some shooter elements, but more tactical / strategy). Fantastic story as well, although the 3rd game was a bit of a letdown.
kinect star wars
for you
red dead redemption
Forza 4 and a steering wheel, which won't work with my Xbox one and is for sale if you fancy it? Probably best to pick up in Leeds though as it's a bulky did!
Failing that, GTA 5, fallout 3/new vegas, battlefield 3 ( better than COD imo), Lego Star Wars.
Red dead redemption. Best game on the platform, GOTY edition is £15 in ASDA.
Life Is Strange. You can thank me later.

It's on Steam now I think. Braid is ace.
What's wrong with paying for Gold? I must have approaching a hundred free games out of it by now.
If you enjoyed Uncharted you may also like ....
the Batman: Arkham series
ah yes i had a batman game
btw. if you play guitar (or want to learn using a REAL one) rocksmith 2014 (and the original) are awesome
Hmm, I don't play guitar and wasn't really planning on learning, but I *do* have a bass guitar in the loft that was given to me a long, long time ago that I failed to do anything with. That Rocksmith thing sounds intriguing !
Ordered Red Dead Redemption & Mass Effect 2.
Cheers all 🙂
Red Dead Redemption is a good one.
Ordered Red Dead Redemption
I envy you.
Game of the Year edition?
Skyrim. Obviously.
bold claim... while it's great & I spent (too) many hours playing it, IMO it's not even the best game in it's genre, let alone the best game full stop.Red dead redemption. Best game on the platform
Massively flawed (boring guns, very samey scenery, lack of inventiveness in missions, the worst implementation of poker in a computer game ever) but there's no denying it's very cool to be a cowboy for a bit!
FWIW my fave game of that type would be one of the later Saints Row games... the series started off as a rip-off of GTA: San Andreas but soon found a character of its own; there are few games like that more varied/inventive/possessed of such outright lunacy. Just tons of fun! Certainly way better than any of the GTA games since Vice City IMO.
Red Dead Redemption
Fallout
Oblivion/Skyrim
Rayman
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare (I liked the solo campaign story)
Condemned Criminal Origins (if you like jumpy/scary games, few bits playing this I nearly jumped out my skin!)
I'm also behind the curve and just picked up a PS3...
Fallout 3 is awesome, I've also got one of the new Batman series. Obviously, Lego Star Wars (the complete edition) is 100% awesome too.
Yeah, any of the Lego games are a good shout (especially 2 player!)
Not a massive fan of Red Dead Redemption. Too much busywork - I already have a job I don't need a 2nd one riding round the wild west catching horses and skinning animals.
Dark Souls 2
GTA 5
Forza Horizon
Forza 4
XCOM Enemy Within
Mass Effect 1,2,3
Fallout 3
Most of these should be buttons
I quite enjoyed Id softwares, RAGE, but I know its not popular.
However, I believe it can be picked up very cheaply.
Actually good point, since most of these games are so cheap we should be focusing on the weird & wonderful.
I would recommended Brutal Legend to anyone who has even a passing interest in heavy metal. It's by Tim Schafer (who did Monkey Island, etc, although it's not one of those games) and an utterly brilliant use of a few evenings and a couple of quid.
Borderlands 2
Very definitely a shooty game, but not overly intense and with a VERY distinctive tone. HUGE fun.
I'm really enjoying BioShock Infinite at the moment. The earlier Assassin's Creed games (Brotherhood is probably the best, but 2 is great too) are corkers also.

Rocksmith works really well with bass. I'd get the 2014 version over the old one. I still keep my 360 purely for that, the Xbox One has no analogue output so it's tricky avoiding latency! I used to play with headphones plugged directly into the component lead cable.
Obviously, Lego Star Wars (the complete edition) is 100% awesome too.
Lego Star Wars was one of (if not the) first Lego game. It's good, but one of the weaker titles in the series.
The earlier Assassin's Creed games (Brotherhood is probably the best, but 2 is great too) are corkers also.
AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations are a trilogy best played in order.
Not a massive fan of Red Dead Redemption. Too much busywork - I already have a job I don't need a 2nd one riding round the wild west catching horses and skinning animals.
Apart from odd bits for quests, a lot of that is optional. One of the nice things I found with RDR is you can fire it up and get wellied into missions, or just pootle around doing not much apart from picking flowers and admiring the scenery, depending on your mood.
while I appreciate the rich, open world that the devs have created, if anyone actually does this rather than, you know, stepping out into their garden or taking a walk to the park, I'd think they have a pretty serious problem. 🙂or just pootle around doing not much apart from picking flowers and admiring the scenery, depending on your mood.
home now.. just had a look through my stash of games..
if you're an ex-skateboarder.. EA Skate, EA Skate 2 and EA Skate 3 are a must.. a realistic sim.. totally brilliant.
also.. Viva Pinata love those too
We're just starting to look at the backwards compatible game list to find more child friendly games from the 360 list as the Xbox One doesn't seem to have as much on it by way of choice.
I'm (I mean the children are) really enjoying Lego Batman, which is our first purchase from the very long list.
Cutesy graphics and a nice mix of puzzles and not too hideous bad guys. Good for just stepping into and playing for a bit and putting it down again type play.

I live in the Lancashire equivalent of Syria. Sometimes I want to see the sunset without coming under mortar fire.
Ive got a wii fit and bunch of games if shes unamused.
I doubt that'll work with an Xbox. (-:
Red dead redemption bored me to tears.
GtaV, Skyrim, Hitman absolution, battlefield 2, 3 or 4. If you like online shootys.
I'm not a fan of the more intense shooters,
Fitness? Get Nike Fitness. Its cheap and actually is a very good work out. Wait till you have to do 250 star jumps...And Just Dance is good for a workout.
Must dig these out again to help with my climbing 😉
fun games? Burnout Paradise
wasnt that amused when the mrs bought me "lips" (karaoke game that comes with mics) and i bought her "just dance" i kicked her ass, she didn't want to play either again - lol

viva pinata for sure
fwiw i loved the DS version too
RDR is fantastic, GTA V is also great (but better played on next-gen or PC tbh).
If you're into skate/snowsports games, SSX is a belter. Easy to learn, difficult to master. Some stupid crevasse levels but the ones with wide open slopes for boarding down are a joy to play through.
Burnout is mint, although the best IMO is Burnout 2 from the original Xbox (which you can play on the 360 AFAIK). Paradise suffers for the "open world" stuff.fun games? Burnout Paradise
Fusion Frenzy is a great party game if you've got 3 other people - the original is on Xbox but playable on the 360. Like a crazy mashup of Gladiators & the Crystal Maze. Also one of the last decent games by the Oliver Twins (Dizzy, lots of Codemasters games from back in the day) before they decided to concentrate solely on utter shite for some reason. (There is a 360 native sequel but I've not played it).

Rocksmith 2014 & lead ordered 🙂 My wife - who is the musical one in the family - thought it was a really good idea for me.
Explain more about the latency thing please ! I've got the Xbox connected via HDMI at the moment, is this going to make things difficult ? Bearing in mind I'm a total beginner and will be playing veeeery slowly at first. I don't have a component lead.
Also ordered Brutal Legend for a giggle. £1.99. After ebay/paypal fees, an envelope & postage cost I'm amazed people actually bother to sell stuff like that. It's cost me what, half a pint of beer ? and will probably provide far more hours of entertainment.
Sure 🙂 Via HDMI I found I was getting a slight delay on playing a note and it coming out the TV. Only 0.5 seconds or so, but it was definitely noticeable and quite frustrating. Since HDMI is digital your signal will be passing through a DAC in your TV or soundbar, this is where the latency was added. You may find you can avoid it with a passthrough/game mode, for our setup it was always there.
Fortunately the 360 has a component out, which is an analogue output. I can't notice any latency whatsoever via this, I used a component to headphone adaptor and route the audio direct to headphones, bypassing the TV entirely. Playing via headphones isolates you from the acoustic sound of the guitar somewhat as well.
There's also has a 2 player mode which is quite good fun 🙂 Needs 2 cables obviously. On the difficulty note, it starts out very easy and ramps up, the idea is to keep replaying the same song for a while so you learn it properly, the very top difficulty level will start hiding the notes it displays, as you should know them by then.
I normally play on PC these days, as there's a huge archive of player made content floating around (Customsforge). Hunting for interesting music with cool bass lines has definitely set me off listening to random stuff I wouldn't normally.
used to love forza 2 spent a lot of time playing that online, tried it last week but no one plays online now
For child-friendly games, look at the Lego series. They're mostly all brilliant (Indiana Jones 2 was a bit of a stinker IMHO). I have, erm, all of them I think, and no children.
Life Is Strange. You can thank me later.
I'm going to pimp this again as no-one took me up on it and it's worth promoting.
Life Is Strange is an episodic, story-driven game akin to the Telltale games (The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead and a supporting cast of thousands). The lead protagonist is a female photography student at college, but don't let that put you off. It's not the twee nonsense it might appear at first glance, you've got an impending disaster, shootings, premonitions, rewinding time and suchlike going on.
As the story unfolds you have to investigate the mysterious goings-on and make decisions which have lasting, game-changing effects. Your choices can affect who lives and dies.
Add to that it's beautifully put together. The characters, the visuals, the soundtrack, it's clearly been a labour of love by the developers. I've never in my life been so emotionally invested in a bloody video game. (-:
Try it - the first episode is either free or not much money.
EDIT - Confirmed, the first episode is free, the entire thing is £14. The first ep is free on Steam too: http://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/319630/
I picked up Life is Strange for 4 quid on Steam t'other day, need to get round to playing it.
Update.
I didn't realise there's a couple of Red Dead games, I ended up with Undead Nightmare and I'm enjoying it 🙂
Mass Effect 2 is a bit too shooty, I've gone off it quite quickly.
Bought a Zumba game for the missus, she seems to like it. Which was the whole point of the xbox in the first place.
Rocksmith, however. Toasty - you are in trouble now ! As a direct result of your suggestion I've ended up spending a whole load of money on guitar stuff. A guitar and another bass, two small practice amps (thankfully both very cheap on ebay), and some associated paraphernalia. And a 1/2 size acoustic for my daughter because she was VERY excited about the whole thing and wanted to join in, but only being 3yo a full sized bass is actually taller than she is 😆
Anyway, it's all very good fun, so thanks again to everyone for the help !
