I'm just about to watch episode 3. Erm, because I'm in America, of course.

It's a Darin Morgan episode, I can't wait. I'm expecting this to be very silly.

<mod edit - I've amended the thread title to differentiate from the other one.>

I'm cautiously looking forward to this tonight...

I'm not sure I'll like it though, I used to love X-Files, but as the series wore on I liked it less, I preferred the one-offs about spooky shit in backwoods places, as it became more about this big conspiracy, men in black, super solders and all that goo stuff it was less for me.

I think the new ones are a continuation of that, but I'm trying to stay open minded.

We've been steadily working our way through the lot, it feels like we've been doing it for years, there are so many of them!

Reading about the whole alien conspiracy malarkey suggests that they stopped it because it had got so complicated nobody really understood what was going on any more...

Watched the first 2 episodes last night, got the third to watch tonight.

Was too impatient to wait, but it's grabbed me again and I was very sceptical.

Now I know that, it makes that episode not so shit! 😆

I hear its only going to have 6 episodes and I didn't think much of the first 3.

The 3rd one was bloody great even if you didn't know who wrote it. Funny as hell the main guy played the part fantastically.

I'm also *cough* in America so have not been using any illicit means to watch the first three episodes of the new series.

Good: Gillian Anderson (still gorgeous after all these years). Some very clever and funny moments taking the mickey out of current political and technological developments.

Bad: Nostalgic memories of being young and carefree, staying up late watching X Files and being scared out of my skin on more than one occasion. Watching it has made me feel very old.

I'm also slowly cracking through the old ones from the beginning. Currently at episode 19 of series 2, gonna be a while before I get to the new ones!

Is this for real?

I'm witnessing the most wooden acted, cliche ridden horridly scripted bunch of junk I think I've ever laid eyes and ears on.

Anderson is doing her best to remain professional, but Duchovny is clearly taking the piss out of the script writers, surely??!

Mulder is his character from Californication just minus the sex.

It was ok, was a big fan back in the day so will see how this one goes as in I hope it gets better 🙁

That's exactly what the Mrs said during this episode, hence me wondering if he was genuinely hamming it up on purpose - some kind of statement of shiteness.

With some decent writing and production quality (the soundtrack was dire!) they have the basis for some classy sci-fi. Instead they appear to have just taken the uber easy option.
Whoever 'they' are...

Luckily, Mulder and rich conspiratist bloke explained the whole series plot to Gilliam Anderson towards the end of this first episode, (she probably didn't bother reading the script after it got so stupid) so I won't need to do one more, never mind 5.

I enjoyed the first one, but the plot was a bit silly - I think they crammed a lot of story in to set the scene for the rest of the series.

On the face of it Mulder has a set of beliefs based around a decade of investigating for the FBI, he has actually seen real aliens - especially in the films and other really amazing out of this world stuff - and then after a short conversation with a web nut and a strange woman who lives in a cabin dismisses it all without a moments pause and leaps to the next crackpot theory. He reminded me of Dale from King of the Hill.

But, I can suspend my disbelief and just enjoy it for all its silliness.

He had stopped believing before that it was in his long drawn out speech he did. I like the way it has digs itself and the silliness it had. The scripts were never great just simple entertainment.

I liked it. The script was terrible, but once I realised it was just one long 'previously on X Files, over the last 15 years..' it ceased to matter. And of course it was a hurried set-up but they've only got 6 episodes. A denouement of the entire god knows how many episodes previously was the only way to go I think.

Brought it all bang up to date, answered a load of questions with more questions - bring it on 🙂 X-Files is its own sub-genre, so it can ham it up as much as it likes in my book. Even then, the concept was delivered with passion and a bit of barbed current political commentary which paralleled the search for truth in the show with the search for truth in real life.

I'm in.

what about the movies, are they included in the cannon? I have a vague memory of something about bees and mulder rescuing scully from a big alien tent or something. Can anyone remember?

I didn't watch the movies!

In fact, I got bored around series 5 or 6 or something. But back then, I was a student and depended on people showing their videos so it was easy to miss. Nowadays with Amaflix I can be much more consistent in my series viewing.

I lost any interest in the plot fairly early on and just resorted to perving over Scully. It's all good as long as Eugene Tombs doesn't make a reappearance, I couldn't shit for a week after that episode.

I was not impressed with episode 1, the dialogue was awful. CSM being back after being blown up seems ridiculous (although we are supposed to get an explanation for this in episode 6 - I hope it's a good one). Mulder was too quick to dismiss all he'd previously seen and believe the new conspiracy.

I have seen up to episode 4 and they have all been much better IMO, especially episodes 3 and 4.

I am enjoying the new series - my thoughts so far:

I am glad they are approaching it silly, not serious.

Gillian Anderson is proper slummin' it, and I hope she is getting paid loads.

Rhys Derby is my favourite kiwi actor, never even tries to do an American accent, well done him, and he should be in everything.
