You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So I bought an item on Ebay by auction. There was only 1 other bid and I got it a very competitive price. Probably around 25% - 30% below typical selling price.
So a couple of days later I noticed that I had received a refund, I sent a message to the seller asking what was going on.
In the reply he said that he had messaged me, he hadn't, and that he had dropped the item during packing, so had refunded me.
The item is pretty robust and it is unlikely that simply dropping it would cause significant damage and I get the impression that he simply wants more money for it and will relist.
What should I do? Ignore, life is too short?
Leave negative feedback, with the possibility that he will just do the same to me?
I am pretty pissed off with the whole thing to be honest.
Leave negative feedback and move on. I've had the same happen to me as well. Got some abuse from the seller but ignored it.
The seller should maybe have put in a reserve closer to what they really wanted for the item, but what are you going to do?
It's frustrating but I'd just chalk it up as "one of those things" and move on.
Just move on
Has happened to the wife a couple of times. Item is broken/lost/eaten buy the dog/kid no longer wants to part with it etc. Couple of weeks later it will be back up for sale.
Leave a bad review and move on.
Ignore, life is too short?
This.
Leave negative feedback if you must… but move on… You’re not getting it.
And this.
Leave negative feedback, with the possibility that he will just do the same to me?
Can sellers leave negative feedback? ISTC not being able to when I was stiffed on a deal.
Edit: I’ve answered my own question with the magic of google…
Sellers aren't able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. That means sellers need other tools that will protect them against unfair treatment from buyers and bring those buyers to eBay's attention. You can block buyers with too many policy violations, unpaid items, or who aren't registered with PayPal.
I have similar right now. Sold & posted a watch to America, tracking shows it delivered. But through some helpful messaging the recipient has finally come back and said he's talked to his local UPS postie who "can't remember which mailbox he put the package in".
Yeah right. Unfortunately Ebay are on the side of the buyer so look like I'll lose out, I have a conversation with them later today.
Did you use the eBay global shipping program? Isn’t it their problem in that instance?
This happened to me a a seller. Made worse by the fact that ebay underestimated the postage meaning I actually lost money on the deal - postage was more than I sold it for. I honoured the deal but I sent the buyer an email telling them what had happened. they sent me a fiver extra so I made a couple of quid instead of losing a couple of quid. good folk working together keeps everyone happy
You seller is an arse. leave bad feedback and move on. Life is too short.
As above, not a great deal you can do about it. At one time, both buyer and seller had to agree to a cancellation, now the seller can bin you off whenever they feel like it.
Happened to me, a few weeks ago. The guy left me hanging for over a fortnight, then cancelled. No reason given...
Quick question, have they reconsidered the ability for sellers to leave bad feedback then?
I thought that was stopped to prevent tit for tat feedback retaliation?
You have to pay extra for a reserve, dont you?
sounds like he just didnt get what he wanted, but hadnt paid for the reserve.
nothing you can do, but certainly leave feedback. the feedback system is what keeps these systems functional.
Winning bidder for my collection only item that ended last night was based in Kenya, when dealing with eBay you have to accept that you'll get a few % of idiots & move on, life is too short to get het up about it.
As others have suggested, move on. I've had this a few times, funnily enough when you've won an auction for what seems like a really good price. Not a lot you can do about it...
I've been on the other end too - remember a set of Hope/Stans 27.5 wheels selling for about £80 a few years back - no idea why when others were all going for pushing £200. Just had to suck it up and sell them - its what a no reserve auction is about.
Wait until the seller re-lists the mysteriously repaired item and buy it using a new account for way more than it's worth. Then don't pay.
The only frustrating thing about leaving negative feedback is that I believe the seller will be able to request the feedback to be removed by eBay. I could be wrong, as no doubt there will be only certain scenarios where this can happen.
It has happened to me though when I had a bad experience, left negative feedback to warn others, then to my amazement the feedback was removed
Who actually bothers to leave feedback anymore? Just move on, it's no big deal, you haven't lost any money.
Who actually bothers to leave feedback anymore?
I always leave feedback when I buy something, as it tells the seller you have it and are happy with the item. Thats how I feel when I get feed back as a seller anyway. Does my head in when I don't get feed back. I want to know they're happy.
I generally use BIN rather than auction now when selling as every one knows where they are price wise.
Yeah, I leave feedback too. In batches and months later, but I still do it.
This is entry-level eBay dickishness though OP, you are not getting that item so just move on with your life.
Was expecting something juicier from the thread title TBH.
I've had two lately:
1) I bought a Frog MTB for my lad at £180 with £5 postage (BIN was £390). I was the only bidder. Didn't expect them to post it but it was only 45mins from my parents so figured could collect if the re-negged. I'd paid but she started blaming her son for listing it without permission, didn't know what he was doing etc etc (funny they managed to add BIN but no Reserve). Tried guilting her saying my sons excited about his new bike but she just refused to let me collect.
2) Buyer bought and paid for an expensive winter coat on Friday night which was listed as postage within 3 working days via Evri, stating she wanted it posting Royal Mail first class as she needed it by Thursday as she was off to Norway. I printed the Evri label and sent first thing Saturday for which I received a load of abuse as I hadn't done what she'd asked. Her coat was delivered Monday afternoon and I got no thanks or apology from her.
ebay/gumtree etc - all full of dicks
Who actually bothers to leave feedback anymore?
Not many people. I get feedback for about 10% of what I sell whereas 10+ years ago I would get feedback for 90% of what I sell.
Seller is in the wrong, but move on (neg feedback if you CBA). It doesn't help that eBay charges a fortune for adding a reserve price. I'm selling a keyboard at the moment and just put the starting bid at what would have been the reserve price (remains to be seen if this puts people off) - surprisingly it seems to be free listing.
It's a shame Vinted doesn't expand into other markets. Compared to eBay/Gumtree/FB it's a breath of fresh air.
Well I had something similar as a seller a year or so back. Thomson elite stem sold on eBay for a very low price with a brand new faceplate. Barely made any money but posted first class regardless. Buyer messaged me two weeks later saying it hadn't been delivered etc...
I had chucked out the receipt because it had been two weeks... So took the buyer at face value, apologised, explained what happened and I gave them a full refund.
The buyer got extremely shirty saying he wanted the bargain stem not a refund and "how convenient I lost the receipt" etc ... Left me feeling a bit shit.
You can't win and sometimes it's best to accept things as they are and move on. eBay is mostly good but there are arses on there.
Oh also don't think you can leave negative feedback if you get a refund.
You're right it's a dick move but you're not getting it. Mine on

Oh also don’t think you can leave negative feedback if you get a refund.
You can, as I did when they refused to sell me the bike.
What was the item? Everyone seems keen to lynch the seller without establishing this
I've noticed damage on an item that I've been packing for posting that I didn't see when listing, refunding the buyer as a result
keep an eye on whether the item re-appears. if it does, bid on it, and win the item regardless of price, then just pay the original price 🙂
