quite a few fought in the civil war... Hemmingway can tell you more about that!

Quite a few german americans fought for and against the nazis. I guess it just depends how amaerican they felt vs how tied they were to their home country? with the mass of theatres to fight in, i'd like to think that an italian american soldier could perhaps be posted to france or the pacific, but on the other hand, wouldn't they feel they were liberating their homeland from a dictator?

IIRC during the 19th and early 20th centuries, after English speakers (English, Scots and Irish) the next highest proportion of immigrants to the USA were German.

There was a whole bunch of Italian-Americans interned in the US, those fighting though hated the Germans and were perfectly happy to fight them and anyone that supported them.
The US even had the Mob [Lucky Luciano] liaise with his Sicilian 'friends' to help the allied cause.

Wors in Africa after a very long and protracted battle the British allowed the Italians to keep their weapons as a mark of respect when they eventually surrended (what was left of the Batallion).
