First of all I’m useless at PC stuff so you’ll have to bear with me please
HP Pavilion laptop, windows 10, it has been asking me if I’d like to carry out a ‘refresh’ to speed things up so I gave it a go. 45 minutes of stopping and starting before it goes back to the lock screen.
Each time I attempt to login on the lock screen it just says my password is wrong. I’ve tried resetting the password via the ‘I forgot my password’ link underneath where you put the password but no joy.
I can login to windows using chrome etc on my phone with the password I’ve created via the laptop, but the laptop itself.
The only options I can select on the lock screen are ‘I forgot my password’, the WiFi symbol and a little circle with two arrows in. No power symbol or similar????
Any help would be much appreciated before my eldest finds out what I’ve done.
Evening.
We had this happen once.
Ended up changing the password on the Microsoft website first, and then logging in on the PC/Laptop.
This is the site - account.live.com/password/reset
Once you’ve changed the password online, you should be OK to log in.
Does that work?
Just tried that, no joy I’m afraid 😕
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Are you using a different keyboard version ? Azerty instead of qwerty ?
I am and sometimes the laptop changes the keyboard version and my password doesn't work !
As far as I can see it’s the same, when I press the little eye icon next to the password it shows exactly what I’ve typed.
The only options I can alter are WiFi, narrator and sticky keys. There aren’t any other options.
If you have a @ or “ then if the keyboard has defaulted to us vs UK they are switched...
No, just letters and numbers.
I know the password is resetting from either the laptop or my phone as it won’t let me reuse a password I’ve previously used in an attempt to reset it again when trying to reset it from the other device using the same passsword again.
If that makes sense?
Just a thought, but would the refresh have lost your wifi settings? If you're logging in with a Microsoft account the laptop might be failing to contact the server to verify if (if you're only connecting via wifi).
As you can access the wifi settings in might be worth ensuring that you're connected to the net (and reconnecting if you're not); alternatively plug an ethernet cable in.
Just a thought... But are you on the PIN entry page where it allows you to log on with a pin number instead of the password page?
Check that you are logging into the correct account. All Windows machines have an Administrator account that is usually hidden. When you install Windows, you create your own account, which can be set as an administrator account, but the original Administrator account is still lurking in the background.
What was this 'refresh'?
Sounds like something you downloaded, not something that you should be running.
There is a Windows refresh, in setting, Updates and Security, Recovery, but I don't think that pops up on it's own, you have to go find it. Do you know exactly what you clicked on?
Thanks.
Its showing as connected to my WiFi, we are having issues with our WiFi dropping out (waiting for an engineer to come), I’ve just tried using my phone as a hotspot and connecting to that instead of WiFi but no joy.
Definitely on the password login and not the pin, I don’t have any option to switch accounts, it doesn’t even give me the option to shut it down or restart it.
richmars, the refresh option was somewhere in the ‘health’ bit (can't remember the proper name). It had been prompting me to perform a scan etc via the taskbar and the refresh was in the same menu.
Anyone? 😕
Or even a trustworthy PC repair shop Bolton’ish?
As above this 'refresh to speed things up' sounds a bit dubious..
It might be clean install of Windows time.
I'm not saying it's the case here, but I've seen before when people have inadvertently downloaded a 'pc health check app' and what actually happens when you run it, is it installs a selection of the Internets finest malware.

As you're a Premier user, you can throw it at me if you want. I'm in Accy / Burnley.

I'm vaguely aware that I've seen this before as legit. It might need flattening and rebuilding though, as Matty says.
Are you absolutely sure that the Windows login and your Known Good login are the same account / username?
Also, what PJay said, that's a very good shout indeed.
There's a fair bit on the net about Windows 10 refusing to accept passwords after an update; one solution suggests that booting to Safemode resolves the issue - it might not for you but could be worth a try. Apparently pressing 4 on the keyboard whilst booting brings up the Startup settings dialog (although I'm not sure if this is bios/mobo specific).
Far out. Premier users getting favours!

Cougar, thanks for the offer it is much appreciated!
All back up and running now, thanks for all the advice offered. In the end I ended up resetting it back to factory settings using the HP stuff. Windows wouldn't let me reset it without a boot disc (that I don't have).
Thanks again.
