I want to write a one off Xmas present Children's book for a toddler.

Simple format: Short simple text on white page on one page with a photograph on the facing page.

Libre office is available. Word isn't.

If it's a big faf I won't bother.

Is there a simple Libre office template to do this or a website that allows me to do it (fast). Or an alternative (free) application to do it?

You've convinced me.

Have you thought about how you could turn it into a trilogy?

By writing two more.

Maybe 20 pairs of picure /words. So that makes 20 pages printed both sides.

You know what - that's a great idea. I'm going to do the same. Cheers.

Maybe better to use Scribus instead of LibreOffice, it is also free. Easier to get it formatted right, and looking nice etc. Not sure if there's any templates, but you could just design one page, then copy it as required.

Some more ideas here: quora book writing linux
As Craig above said, design the first DPS and then copy & paste.

Going to print it? Have a look at what Blurb can do, their Booksmart software is very good. Loads of built-in templates.

Photo book?

Some places you download a bit of software and set them out on your PC, others are web-based, but you upload a bunch of photos and arrange them as you want. They usually allow you to have a blank page with just text.

I've used Blurb to do big (A3 ish) one-off photobooks of holiday snaps. Software is dead easy to use. They do a whole range of book sizes, take your pick. there are quite a few places online that do photobooks, have a google, ask on here for recommendations on quality of product.

[edit: damn you bencooper! :D]

As already said Blurb is the answer

hard back with the wrapped cover

If you pay for no logo and do your job well know one will know it wasn't a professional product
