Would you rather be rich-ish, but live in a cultural desert of a city, or just able to get by in a culturally rich city?
Leave rural options out of the question for a moment.
I ask because many years ago, I lived in a desolate part of Canada, and used to drive past a super large, brand new house, perched on the top of a small, man-made hill. Just on the outskirts of a quaint, but very provincial and not-very-accessible city, its owners were probably quite well off compared to others in the region. But every time I passed it, I wondered: would I want a huge house like that, with all the "toys" they had parked around their multi-acre property? Or would I rather just be me, living in Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver?
So, I put the same question to you.
If living in the "culturally rich" city meant being around judgemental knobs like you I'd opt for the other one.

I rather be rich-ish to live in a cultural desert of a city coz there is something called internet (I would pay for all the cost of installing a superdoper fibre optic or satellite connection whatever connecting myself to the world) and better still with lower population ... also I can walk nakid on my compound ... let it hang out ... 😀
Well, I’m not that well-off, but I live in a rather lovely county, with easy access to cities like Bath, Bristol, London, with as much culture as I could want, plus varied countryside ranging from the valleys around Castle Combe to the chalk downland from Avebury down to Salisbury, the bottom edge of the Cotswolds is pretty much where I am.
I’d rather be better-off living where I am, and be able to afford to take advantage of everything my part of the British Isles has to offer.
Hope that helps.

I guess there is nothing like the sort of place I’m referring to here in the UK and Europe more generally. So I suppose my question is moot. But I’m sorry you perceive it the way you have.
Well, I just get by in (well, near to) the cultural wasteland that is Portsmouth, and spend a fair whack of my income driving to a culturally rich(er) city . But I preferred being well(er) off, so I’d have that.
If I'm rich-ish, I can afford to go to cultural places.
If it helps, I live in a nice big house but it’s in the middle of an impoverished , post-industrial shithole but it’s ok because I earn vastly more than the average in the town on account of having an actual job and everything.
I’ve found lording it over the plebs to be an adequate substitute for cultural enrichment and it gives the dogs plenty of exercise.
I despise the poor.
I live in Birmingham and am not rich. Hmm...
What's your idea of rich? We have enough to live in one of the houses on here:

Perfect
I live in beautiful downtown Burnley AND I own my own turnip.
One can have it all.
What a great question, that I do not know the answer to.
We have this discussion often.
At the moment we prefer to just get by and live in the best city in the world.
So often the crux of the matter is decided by wanting our son to grow up in such a culturally rich environment and then we go home to The north west and definitely feel a pull.
If I had the sort of money that would build me my ideal house on my ideal piece of land, then it would be far away from everything.
But I would travel a lot, to lots of different places. so the isolated location of my home would be a small part of the overall puzzle.
Peace and quiet at home, and the ability to do what you want ruining anyone else’s, is a great thing.

Impressive.
So many try-hards these days just lease fancy Turnips that they can't really afford just to show off to their neighbours.
We looked at leasing, but at the end of the day it's never really YOUR turnip.
I've never aspired to own a big German turnip.
My turnip does not define me.

Neither has matt_outandabout.
He got a massive Swede instead .....but he doesn't like to talk about it. 😉
I used to live in Edinburgh and never had a pot to pi$$ in, could barely afford to go out to the festival, to busy working to enjoy it all etc. We now live in, my opinion, a hole in Ireland, Cork, but are more comfortably off. I would take Cork with the cash any day as it allows us to do more and we are all happier.
Edukator
do you not find your pool is a bit overlooked from the white blocks at the end? id move to somewhere else in the city maybe?
Unfortunately perhaps I find myself intolerant to how other people conduct themselves a lot of the time, and of course am naturally introverted.
Im not really bothered about objects these days, but having a quite space in a sunny spot within the boundaries of my property ownership, where I can sit with my favourite beverage according to the time of day uninterrupted and in peace is my choice.
I never want to live in a city. 4 bedrooms and land to shoot on would be my dream.
Rich and in a cultural vacuum every time for me. Most people that I know who actually live in cities don’t actually visit anything that’s in the city. No art galleries, museums etc.
Duirdh returns
Spot on BTW.
Buy a house in S****horpe. There you can fulfil your dreams of living in a culturally rich city and be rich at the same time.
Probably. Not.
I moved to a place where we can afford two turnips neeps. We have a show turnip neep that only gets used at weekends and an every day turnip neep. #livingthedream

Yeah, that seems a bit disproportionate.

You clearly haven't been to Aviemore 🙂

Irony of judgmental knob Irony
What colour is this house, we don't want anything too bright?
I have no desire to live in a culturally rich city (or any city). I like to live away from it all and visit 'culture' when I feel the need (which is very rarely).
No rural option, aa'hm oot.
Would you rather be rich-ish, but live in a cultural desert of a city, or just able to get by in a culturally rich city?
Ah yes, the question that has puzzled South Walians for generations, live like a King in Swansea, or a Pauper in Cardiff?
Anyway, slightly more seriously, I'm not big on Art Galleries or the Theater, but I love the City I live in, I've lucky enough to travel a decent amount and live in other places, if just for a short time, so I'm fairly confident I live here because I want to, not because I don't know anything else.
I don't make enough of an effort to enjoy it though, there's so much cool stuff going on, and half the time I just moan about the traffic.
Would you rather be rich-ish, but live in a cultural desert of a city
This. Because you can make your own culture. You can get books and films wherever you are. Being rich-ish isn't about having a big house or fancy toys, of course - it means having the power to do what you want to do, which might be to travel, work less, do hobbies etc.
I guess there is nothing like the sort of place I’m referring to here in the UK and Europe more generally.
This is true, you have to spend some time in a US/Canadian Midwestern town to really appreciate what he means.
Rich-ish
Cities can ****rightoff - despise them.
ESPECIALLY London!
