Please give reasons 🙂

Specifically looking at this course (not for me): http://www.bradford.ac.uk/study/courses/view/?c=game-design-and-development-4-years

I did and I'm still here (ok not exactly on campus but still in the district).
Hope you like curry, there are plenty of cheap & cheerful curry houses nearby.

how much is that course going to cost you?

my 2p, use the internet to learn. Everything you need will be there. Install unity/udk4 and search for tutorials, will possibly be harder work but will save your save ALOT of debt.

not to sound harsh, but the example work doesnt look too great

I would, but then I'm from Bradford so possibly biased. It does have a good reputation for tech & engineering courses though.

No. Sorry. Know someone who works there. +1 firestarter. The curry wasn't even that good the once I risked stopping.

If the course was outstanding then yes. Otherwise no.

The main thing needs to be the course and if Bradford had the best course available for that area of study then I'd go to Bradford, or anywhere else for that matter. If the course was an unknown quantity or one of many similar courses offered by different universities then I'd be looking into secondary factors such as where would also be a nice place to live and experience university life for 4 years, reasonably easy access to friends, family etc. and for me Bradford is unlikely to be that place.

I spent four years in Bradford, when I was doing my degree they offered a very highly regarded modern foreign languages course with an emphasis on practical usage (interpreting and translating) as opposed to one more literacy based with an emphasis on reading and discussing "classic" literature. I had a great time and although I often heard rumours of people having problems with locals, never saw any concrete evidence

However that was 25 years ago (**** me I feel old saying that), we went back this summer for a reunion to find the languages faculty has been closed, but there have been major improvements to the university campus and the town centre over the years

It may not be the best place in the world, but I wouldn't discount it out of hand

my mate did a similar course at UEL. He was pretty happy with the course and is now successfully working in the field.

go for a good course, location is 2nd imo. they'll be coursemates to hangout with & most students don't have any idea about which city there in.

I went to uni in Bradford, I graduated in 2011 after spending 4 years there.

Bradford is obviously a very (very very very) cheap place to live. I did an engineering degree there and I found the lecturers very good. They were always happy for you to turn up at their office outside of lectures for some help and a general chat which was nice. I cannot comment on your particular course but they seemed to do a lot of that sort of stuff there.

If you look beyond the poverty in the area some of the city itself and the surrounding area is actually quite nice. We used to go to Leeds regularly for nights out. Bradford really doesn't cut it in that department.

Yes, Bradford upon Avon is a gorgeous little town. which along with York and Malton has a jolly little street called The Shambles, isn't that interesting?

Bradford, West yorkshire, on the other hand, is a ghastly place. wouldn't spend 4 minutes there, never mind 4 years.

I spent a year there pre uni.

Not saying it's rough but in the short time I was there a guy ran into my building with a machete embedded and I witnessed someone being thrown through a 1st floor window above a takeaway! Oh, and someone pinched my end of year display from the gallery... apart from that it wasn't too bad.

No. I've been to Bradford.

Bradford, West Yorkshire. Population 501,700 (the vast majority of which are chavs, Asian drug dealers and partially disabled alcoholics on benefits). Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be enough words available in the English language to emphasise what a complete and utter f*****g s**t-hole this place really is.

Apparently Bradford is the sixth largest city in the country, in terms of population, and was nominated for European City of Culture in 2008. Located just a few miles south of Ilkley Moor and the Bronte country, with its apparently diverse culture and industrial heritage, outsiders may be forgiven for thinking that Bradford might be a nice or interesting place to visit. “Why don’t we pop over to Bradford and have a trip to the National Media Museum Marjory?”

Don’t ****ing bother!

Bradford is literally hell on earth. The city centre resembles a squalid cess pit, full of monstrous partially demolished 60’s concrete office blocks, Pound shops, amusement arcades, prostitutes, heroin addicts, Eastern European car-jackers, Asian drug dealers, pre-pubescent mums and mad alcoholic tramps having arguments with themselves. It needs to be blown off the face of the earth. There is NOTHING good about Bradford.

Dare to use public transport around the Interchange and you will inevitably get stabbed. Venture a mile or so out of the city centre (if you dare) and things don’t improve one bit. The area of Manningham (famous for some of Britains worst ever riots in 2001) resembles a third-world war zone. Listerhills, with it’s derelict crumbling mills and huge selection of emaciated, smack riddled whores wandering the streets, even in broad day light, is literally a no-go area, whilst Great Horton, Frizinghall and Thornbury offer nothing but row upon row of run-down or boarded up terraced houses, where you’ll struggle to find anybody at all who speaks English. Venture a couple miles North to Shipley and be confronted by a population of uber-chavs who reside on notorious council estates such as Windhill and West Royd. These cider swilling, wizz snorting, tracksuit wearing monsters are truly dangerous people, who will no doubt “kick t’ **** out o’ yer” if you even glance in their direction. Set eyes on the architectural ogre of Shipley clock tower and you will no doubt require some sort of counselling.

Bradford: A City of Extremes. Extreme violent crime, sexual crime, murder, burglary, drug abuse, unemployment etc. etc.

Apparently Bradford Council is now slashing its workforce by 20% to enable funding of the construction of a huge pond in the city centre. Great work! This will no doubt be full of supermarket trolleys, traffic cones, syringes and dead pissed-up tramps within minutes of opening.

As if Bradford’s reputation hadn’t been tarnished enough over the last 30 years, it now boasts another famous serial killer to bolster further it’s image as the true infected arse-hole of the UK.

Bradford………Avoid it

Bradford? Hmm went that way a few years ago (by mistake) on the way to the Dales it was hard to believe a place like that still existed in 21st century UK. The sort of place you drive through and think it'll get better but it never does. Not dissimilar to Wolverhampton but more depressing because of its location.

Anyway in terms of a degree there's much more to it than facts and learning. As the saying goes it's not what you know it's who you know and the first question I'd be asking about any degree course is what contacts they have

I visited a couple of times last month. Oh dear it does rank pretty low down of the places I've been.

Strangely also one of the few places I've been where the local guys on site weren't in the slightest bit defensive of "their" town. Usually folk are quite keen to tell you about their area and what they're up to.

Me: "So do you live quite local?"
Local: "Yer"
Me: "Any good?"
Local: "No, bloody awful." followed by a long rant.

If the course was worth it and the location / transport links worked then I'm sure it'd be survivable.

Railways you either travel in the Up or Down direction. Apt that which ever way you approach Bradford you are always traveling in the Down.

They're trying to make Bradford better, been quite a bit of money spent there recently. I still wouldn't want to live in the city of Bradford but some of the surrounding areas are great. Leeds for nights out, Calderdale, Kirklees (Huddersfield) for riding.

Fixed that for you.

I live near Bradford and avoid it all costs. My wife has to visit a client near Little Germany and refuses to use her own car so the company has to provide a company car or hire one every time she goes.

If it's a big northern town you want Liverpool Manchester or Leeds will all offer an infinitely better student experience.

Thanks, I think there's a pattern emerging here...

Son;s looking for Games Development Degree courses, dismissed London as a bit spendy, this was an alternative.

I quite like the idea of Merthyr Uni which does a similar course as it's convenient for South Wales trails during parental visits.

I find Bradford horrible, hate going there, hate driving there, but I feel that way about any large city.

I've known plenty of people who like Bradford, been to the University a few times for gigs and it's as run down as umpteen other student areas I've been in.

I've known a few people who have done game design courses and they're all doing fairly well. One guy I knew a few years ago is now living in Finland working for Gameloft and passed my earning potential about 3 years after he graduated.
It's probably still enough of a niche market that if it's something you're good at and can be flexible about work location after the course, then four years in a sh!t hole down will be a fairly small price to pay.

Friend above did his course in Middlesbrough - which made Bradford look good.

I live in Leeds we look down on Bradford. I was born in Ossett all the Mills and Pits in Ossett closed before i was born it lost its railway station and the town centrer failed after pedestrianisation and out of town superstores emerged we looked down on Bradford in Ossett.

But as a student the costs will be cheap and so the issue is does the course standout. Crankygirl had a difficult choice between Leeds and Bradford for radiography 2 years ago , but chose Leeds for apparent commuting ease.

I went to Salford in 1994, the reason for going there (the music course was highly regarded and had a LOT of competition for places) outweighed the relative lack of kudos for the university and although the area was horrible it was bearable for the reason above

nowadays sadly, the tuition fees etc mean that it's even more of a hard-headed commercial decision as to which uni/course, as per muppetWranglers post, it needs to be an outstanding course to be worth the investment as employers are going to subconsciously rate the uni (oxbridge>russellgroup>redbrick>other>renamedpoly/tech). I wish it weren't the case but....

The quality of the course should be the primary factor. Then comes the city and quality of life factors. The reputation of the Uni is important as that will impact job prospects.

To answer personally Bradford no, Leeds yes. 2 of my 3 daughters went to Uni in Leeds, one stayed on for 2 years working there and the other married a local. I am very happy about all of those decisions. Leeds and Bradford are quite different.

I did, 4 years finishing in 2008. Never been back and I only live in Leeds (well with 7 years in Swansea since then). The uni was great, met my wife and had a good time. Didn't enjoy the city though, no real culture other than cheap theme bars.

I suppose it depends where he wants to live and if he wants the full "student" experience. There are plenty of decent places to live within easy biking/driving/public transport distance, he doesn't have to live in Bradford itself.

I worked at the back of the Uni for years - plenty of colourful characters, working girls occasionally loitering around the car park, chavs, drug dealers yadda yadda. We never had a moments bother, I walked around plenty and never got stabbed or shot (at least I don't think I did!). Even the "Crossbow Cannibal" never bothered me 🙂

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bradford-west-yorkshire-11541168

It's a city with character & it will give him plenty of life experience!

Jesus, wwaswas, I was born in Bradford and agree that it's the absolute pits (I moved out to Yeadon 30 years ago) but f***in' Merthyr. I worked there for a week and that was a week too long, sh1th0le doesn't cover it.

Son;s looking for Games Development Degree courses,

Bradford aside (though FWIW, no), whilst this may be a way into the industry, he should be very aware what the industry's like.

No doubt there are people with rewarding careers there, but also many, many do not (out of those that even get started). As a compsci graduate a few years ago now none of my peers that went into the industry are still there....

For a comparison/analogy, maybe consider out of however many do english lit degrees (or creative writing/ similar), how many actually end up writing the novels they want to write, and earning a living? and how many end up writing say copy for the back of cereal packets or something, or nothing related at all....

However to stop being devil's advocate... I'm a strong believer in "do what's interesting, and be the best you can at it" and you'll make it work somehow. And hey, even a games design degree's gotta be more useful than english lit 😉

*dons flameproof suit* 😉

He's doing a Games Development BTEC and, tbh, it's the first thing he's done educationally that's ever commanded his attention and he's wanted to succeed at - he's been getting top marks of his intake throughout the last 15 months.

I'd rather he got a good grade in an 'odd' degree in subject he's keen on than try and steer him towards something more general that he ends up not succeeding in.

He looked at Merthyr and quite liked it, it's close to Cardiff and I think he quite liked the fact it's a 'smaller' campus. Coincidentally, one of my sisters did her Computer Science degree there about 20 years ago and it was probably a lot worse then - she enjoyed it. It's closer to our home in Brighton too.

Im pretty sick of all the Bradford bashing that appears in media and it looks like on here.
The city has been and still is in economic trouble, the council has faced year after year after year of cuts from central government and the city finds it hard to attract investment because of the crap people constantly spurt out about the place.

Yes, there are a large amount of immigrants, but not as many as London, birmingham and others. The place has its problems but in comparison to Leeds and Manchester the crime rate is a lot lower.

Its a very diverse place, surrounded by beautiful countryside and had great access to the rest of the country.

Interesting recent article: http://www.independentleeds.co.uk/blog/bradford-our-influential-next-door-neighbour/

And of course: http://metro.co.uk/2014/08/13/13-reasons-why-bradford-is-the-greatest-city-in-the-uk-4828613/ 😀

The university and his education should obviously be the reason why you choose a place to study, my first point of call would be to look for reviews or ratings on the course in comparison to others.
