What does a clutch cost ?
alfa
your looking at the 1.9 jtdm, with the 6 speed box.
if the clutch is gone, your likely to need the dual mass flywheel as well.
£400 clutch
£600 DMF
having said that...
they also have a notoriously weak gearbox, if it has not had a reconditioned on in it with the uprated bearings, you run a good risk of needing that at some point ~800
given that he is selling as spares/repairs and needs towing....
it sounds to me like he is trying to pull a fast one and I would guess that it needs the whole shebang needed total cost ~1.8k from my alfa specialist in mansfield, possibly more if your london way.
I might be being paranoid tho...
I talk from some "experiance" as have just had to do all the above on my alfa 159, that has the same engine, gearbox and clutch.
He's got good feedback though 😕
Ask him if he would allow the local Alfa independent specialist to have a look at it and confirm that a clutch is all that it needs, and look to see what else might be needed.
If it is not a wreck and the list of work needed is not too unreasonable for its age, then go for it.
I gave away my 156 where the clutch was 'going' (it actually went a couple of miles away from the garage he was taking it to for the work - after I had just driven from Surrey to Birmingham with it) and the recipient has really done it up now and it is good to see it still 'alive'.
I paid 7k for my GT some years ago and then 3.5k on 'repairs' and fixing up anything that looked iffy.
Also check the alloys and look for large amounts of balance weights, which will not be a good sign. www.performancealloys.com do decent replicas if needed that are much cheaper than the originals.
I wouldn't get it myself though as I prefer the petrol engines.

everyone's got to start on eBay...
But im getting my coat on this one !
Looked more fun than my micra !
Until the clutch went...
Sold as spares or repairs would need to be towed away.
😆 OP don't cut corners and buy cheap. What happens if you discover its a worn clutch but also the cambelt let go?
Zero feedback yet the advert reads as if he's used eBay plenty of times. That always worries me when I'm buying something from a seller with no feedback.
Probably just me!
I'm going to go with cambelt. OP offer him/her £200
ive walked !
my day dream head has gone back to spraying my campervan !
Everytime Ive looked at a Alfa my head brought me back.
I remember a friend was selling his Brera and he gave me a list of current things that will need addressing.
No,
This has all the hallmarks of a nasty money pit that's on it's way to the scrappy.
Clutches don't usually 'go' they start slipping, you can drive for months on a slipping clutch if you have to, has the current owner driven it to the point when it simply doesn't move at all, or has it, as other have pointed out - shat it's gearbox? What else is wrong with it? It's been sat idle for about 3 months, probably more - no one tells the whole truth on eBay.
It doesn't seem to be any sort of bargain either - a quick look shows it's worth maybe £2000-£3000 in fully working order with a fresh MOT even if it's tip-top minus the clutch you'll need at least £1000 for the clutch, DMF and labour.
The seller has zero feedback and the account is 2 days old - yes everyone has to start somewhere, but no everyone has to buy a 'spares or repairs' Alfa from them.
And if that wasn't enough to ensure the buyer has almost zero come-back, he will take cash only.

my 156 wasn't slipping before it went - just a high bite point I think - can't really remember apart from the fact it wasn't slipping.
If you want an Alfa dont go for a basket case then buy one with history and in good condition. They are a cheap as chips second hand buy without buying scrap.
No, for 2 reasons.
1) It has a diesel engine
2) The diesel engine is broken
If you're buying an Alfa find a good one that has been well looked after and has a history with a good independent specialist - they're still not expensive cars but they do need looking after properly, luckily there are a car out there owned by proper enthusiasts.
That car aside from being knackered is filthy, a boring colour and a diesel.
what happened to the beemer?
was watching these videos yesterday :
Ooof. I Do love the sound of a Nord engine on webber 45s and have a huge soft spot for the Giulia Super.
Shameless but here is our Super, bit of a sleeper with 2.0 t.spark, sorted suspension and brakes but outwardly standard. Gets lots of use, time on track, trips to Europe and even been used for a few weddings. Love the thing, most fun car I've ever driven.
The old man also races this…
what happened to the beemer?
Wife stole it ! And made me sell her Almera Tino...
im only allowed it at weekends !
I have a 15 year old Micra so was day dreaming re cars...but I've come back to planet earth and I'm sticking with the Micra !
Lol!
My 159 SW got an almost clean bill of health last week from a specialist (Autolusso) - just a dodgy brake caliper, and has carried bikes around. It generates interest in the office car park.
I like it. But will be buying an extra warranty just in case.
recommend these guys if they are near anybody here :
Rusper nearby is also very good :

oh the crafty buyer I bought the BMW from didn't offer that 😆
...MOT 🙄
Wow jamesfts, that pic of your Giulia Super takes me back to a family holiday in summer 1971. We drove to Sicily and back, stopping over at relatives living near Turin.
It was in a Giulia Super 1600 in a similar colour to yours. Stock except for the roof rack with tarp covered luggage (all the rage in those days!). We were four up, three adults and a kid (me). Stonking car which was more than a match for the journey, it didn't miss a beat.
Recall that some of roads were quite poor compared to the route today. Most of the time it was sweltering (no air con) apart from the alpine bit when it turned cold and wet, and the climbs/descents were quite treacherous.
Always had a soft spot for the Giulia Super after that experience.
