...without Rupert Murdoch's money behind the Sky team?
I know Rupert has many fans on here - and I'm sure many of you will now be subscribing to Sky to support British cycling even more! 😉
😆
🙄
40% of murdochs money?
Heard on the radio today that Sky's budget is the 6th highest out of the pro teams. Perhaps they've used their budget more wisely than the teams with higher budgets. The course this year has of course suited Wiggins as well.

Well, they got an experienced doctor in...
Less tan 40 % of News international money.
Would not be my first choice of sponsors [ surprising eh] but as i dont give them a penny nowt to do with me what they do with their money.
Whos the doctor they have ?

I have no problem with Sky spending thick football fans subscription money on a cycling squad

I believe Markie may be suggesting that certain chemicals are in the blood stream of the sky riders
You may not think you give Sky money but if you have a TV licence, you certainly do - not that you have any choice in the matter
The BBC pay Sky for lots of services
Nailed on for SPOTY or best Team I would of thought. Hopefully a few other British companies will get into sponsoring cycling or other so called minority sports ie not football.
I don't really care. We get a winner and all anyone does is gripe and whinge about it. Suppose it is normal for this country though
All we need now is lots of cycling medals whilst the athletes fail at the olympics again to raise the sports profile even more .We just need some to do cross country mtb at the highest level now as thats about the only discipline we are weak in

I don't trust professional cyclists to be clean, however vehement their protestations.
Sky made a lot of noise about being clean and having a zero tolerance policy as regards drugs and then went on to hire an ex Rabobank doctor from the time of Rasmussen and Dekker.
Clean or not, it was a great win - and I can't imagine they care what I think! 😀
Admittedly Rupert does remind me of Davros, but...
I don't think you can take anything away from Wiggins winning with corporate backing paying some bills though. Been a while since any Grand Tour was won any other way.
Hugely happy to see the British team perform so well.
But rather disappointed the team's funded by Sky. But let's not let it spoil the celebrations, eh?

I'm quite happy that some of their available cash goes to this sort of thing

Statement well and truly swept.
It depends whether Sky's finance will help their team dominate the sport for a long time to come, one only has to look at how Sky money has ruined English football.
Taking rupe's money off him? Terrible
Well done for looking for an angle to spoil it all though. Very English of you 😉
I should add to my opening post - I am a Sky subscriber and have been for many years - there I said it!
Clean or not, it was a great win - and I can't imagine they care what I think!
There was sports science lady on "More Or Less" on Radio 4 the other day, saying that as far as they could tell, and in spite of technological and training advances, everyone was actually a bit slower this year. They worked out the watts per kg of various riders on climbs and saw a 10% increase in power on the last climb of stages (when having paced hyourself all day, you would really open up and go for it), as opposed to 25% increase on final climbs in the more doping-heavy tours of recent years. They reckoned this was an indicator of a cleaner tour, but also agreed it made for rather less dramatic stage finishes. 😆
yes, because the likes of orica are a cornucopia of goodness....
Nailed on for SPOTY or best Team I would of thought
In an Olympic year? 😯
I suppose if he wins the Olympic TT he might have a chance - as he then has more Olympic medals than Redgrave (or anybody else British).
Subscribe to the full Sky package so quite happy as a cyclist some of that money has gone to a succesful British team at the TDF, and the fact they might/will win makes it even sweeter 🙂
Hats off to all involved and hope they keep it up.

+ Several million
Thanks for that info Julian, what a cool way of keeping check!

I wonder how many Pinerallo bikes have been sold since sky and team gb started using them.
Actually, SKY have been putting a fair bit of cash into cycling - no idea why, or whether Rupert has some machiavellian scheme to lever more money out of the populace by doing so, but they sponsor loads of SKY rides round the country and so on.
After tomorrow they might find themselves having funded, by accident or design, a far bigger transformation of British social attitudes than they've ever achieved via the Sun - I think there's already a groundswell in people's participation in cycling, and that's only going to get bigger after Bradley puts on the MJ tomorrow in Paris.
If he leads out Cav for the win, I reckon we can expect the people to march on parliament wearing stick on sideburns!
Don't know, can't really answer it, but I hope he gets to the finish okay and Cavendish takes the stage win.

Thanks for that - I go to football matches, I subscribe to Sky. Care to explain which part of that makes me thick?
...without Rupert Murdoch's money behind the Sky team?
Lots of the right ingredients are there, the money just opened doors to bring the right people together at the right time and give them focus.
The fact Sky riders mention team work in all their interviews I think speaks volumes.
Having 1st & 2nd I reckon shows the success applies just as much to the management like Dave Brailsford and the rest of the non riding team. Everyone building on their Olympic pedigree. Trace that back far enough though and you'll probably find it all started with Lottery funding 15 years ago.
It's not down to one guy or a sponsor, this win will be down to British professionalism across the board.
Thanks for the iplayer link Julian.

Quick trip to Richmond park on a Sunday morning should tell you the answer 🙂
Care to explain which part of that makes me thick?
Maybe the failure to understand that he doesn't suggest all Sky subscribing football fans are thick? 😛
Well... if they hadn't such a large budget someone else might've employed Froome...
Sky do seem to be helping raise the profile of cycling and trying to get more people into it. Sky rides, is there some sneaky money earner in there or is it just trying to get the coutry's population off their arses and out of cars?
there might be some evil scheme behind it all but I can't see it at the moment.
I would be inclined to buy some Sky Team cycling kit if the team weren't sponsored by Sky.
Why are cycling teams named after their sponsors rather than being named after a place they are based, or the founder or something else? I'd be more inclined to buy some Wiggo CC kit.
Only as Chief Exec of NewsCorp
As a sky customer I'm quite happy that some of my money has gone towards brad winning. And very happy that sky are a sponsor of British cycling in general. Its a shame that I can't do any of the sky rides this year to show my support.
As far as media suppliers go I think sky has had the biggest impact on sports that I follow, cycling and F1. What other single sponsor has helped a single British sport as much as they have?
It's not sky that f-cked up football. It was the FA and the 20 premier league clubs. Any REAL football fan knows this.
As for sky sponsoring our riders. I'd prefer it wasn't them but it is. Thanks for the money.
Im a Sky subscriber f,ootball fan ,and cyclist and it was my post ,and its still good to see Rupert spending thick football fans money on cycling
One of my best times was being on holiday in Majorca sat at the pool bar watching a whole tour stage which kept the Kappa and Londsdale wearing grunts from watching a pre season Tour Everton game LMFAO
The fact Sky riders mention team work in all their interviews I think speaks volumes.
Or it's just bland PR babble like every single other team.
I don't give a rat's arse - we are having a purple patch in cycling so let's just enjoy it.
