It seems an excellent camera for under £300 - anything I should be careful of and any weaknesses? I'd use a UV filter to protect the lens and also get a polaroid filter.
Anyone got one?
Many thanks as always
Seen a few comments on a bird forum I use, mostly positive although noise does get a mention especially if using the auto settings, guessing it bumps the iso right up
Also at full zoom its not going to be that great given its extreme range, one other thing I read was about the tripod mount being plastic, so maybe take care in that area
Sure its very good, but accept its a compact and don't compare it to a DSLR
I had one of these, it's ok but for the people and action shots I always just missed the picture. It's just too slow. For lanscapes and othe stills I found it very good, a rest was a must for the full zoom.
However, for menu wanted to take the smiling pictures if my new born daughter so i ebayes it after a week and bought a nikon d5000 slr for £500 with a twin lens ki (although nothing like the zoom)t, filters and a bag. Right choice for me.
Got the wife a canon sx30is after comparing fuji, lumix etc. excellent spec and good revews, you tube had some good footage. Just around 300 on amazon. only fault so far is like above comment a bit slow on the uptake
Sorry, was typing on the phone. 😳 I guess you get the general idea though!
Read a lot about this camera on the DP Reviews forum.
To get good results, it has to be used in the M setting, basically rendering it an 8mp camera, due to the small sensor. A steep learning curve is also required to get the best out of it using the manual settings.
Video is less than useless due to the AF constantly searching.
That said, it is claimed to give good results in the right hands - a more user friendly device and great with video would be the Sony HX100V - the IS is much better.
Remember these are just compact cameras with a whacking great zoom lens strapped to the front.
nothing wrong with the HS20
but for that money you could also consider an Olympus E-PL1 (275 at amazon free del)
which I think would serve you better in the long run, as it would take other lenses and stabilise legacy lenses... its not much different in physical size.. infact it seems smaller.. whilst packing a much bigger sensor
edit: or E-PL2 for 299 at Jessops:
