Would external blinds cool my conservatory?

Very boring topic, I know....

We have a 12 x 2.5m conservatory that we inherited when we bought the place. We're exploring options at the moment, up to and including replacing it with an extension.

One option, is external blinds controlled remotely via a thermostat. Conveniently, my neighbour runs a company that fits them.

I don't believe internal ones would do much to cool it but does anyone have actual experience of the external ones?

I was talking to myself in my conservatory thread...

If ultimately you're going to ditch it, then I wouldn't spend money on blinds. I think roof blinds will cool it a bit but it'll still be freezing in winter

I open the door, with internal ones closed.

Sorry dmorts, didn't spot that thread!

The reason we're thinking thermostat remote controlled ones is that the shades will close automatically when we're out, which means we're not around to leave the doors open. We have a lot of plants in there so a bit of temp control is required. The internal doors are not the most robust so wouldn't leave it open when we're away.

As for winter, it's only rarely used when we have lots of friends round and we spill out into it. I'll then begrudgingly put the heating on. 🙄

I used internal roman blinds and then used green house glass paint on the glass roof. It made a massive difference, room was habitable on the hottest days and a nice calm light instead of the horrendous brightness it was before.

The blinds were ikea. I used regular green house paint applied by roller in thin coats. You can also buy a special glass paint that peels off if you want to remove it. It was more expensive.

Everything I did was an experiment really but It was completely successful in making the space usable. The plants were much happier and was a lovely space to eat and hang out

good feedback kormoran!

Dont know if I’ll go down the painting route but interesting to gear that the internal ones work. They’re a lot cheaper!

We have external blinds on the velux windows in our loft room and they do make a noticeable difference on hot sunny days.
