I'm crap at chess, considering the awesome extent of my intellect in other areas, and I never play. Who's into it?

Could never stand chess - just thinking about the possible permutations fries my brain and makes me lose interest straight away.

Bridge, on the other hand, I love!
Not that that's particularly straight forward.

My parents are great bridge players. I have been partially schooled in it, but of course I've got no partner. Maybe when me and Mrs Grips reach our 60s...

Haven't played for years, but I used to love it. I'd be up for it.

It was my favourite time sink in my unemployed days .. pot of tea, rolling baccy, Test Match Special and chess board.

I don't think I've ever solved one of those chess problems in the papers though.

Make sure it's at lunchtime, the dinner ladies will protect you from the Big Hitters bullying you.

I used to play chess at lunchtimes in my previous job, there was a guy there who was well into it.
Only thing I've got now is a chess app on my phone but the thing takes so long thinking at the higher levels that it's almost unworkable.

it's called agebraic notation - every row has a letter and every column has a number, so each square can be identified - left hand side, nearest you (assuming you're white) is a1, next to it is a2, above it is b1, diagonally opposite is h8
pieces are identified by letters R-rook, N-Knight, B - Bishop so Bb5 -> Bishop to square b5. if there's nothing to identify the piece being moved it's a pawn. The numbers are the Move numbers - 6 so far in the game I'm playing.
O-O kingside castle, O-O-O queesnide castle, B*a4 Bishop takes what's on b4

so 1.e4 d5 means the first move was king's pawn forward 2 squares (from e2) to e4, black replied moving his queen's pawn forward 2 squares (from e7) to e5, in front of mine.

Like chess but never make time to play it. Prefer bridge too - played a lot in the last few years. An endlessly challenging game.

with some additional information, this becomes portable game notation (.pgn) which is a machine readable text file. this means that games can be emailed as text, fed into some software (I'm using babas Chess just now) so the game can be imported into some softeawe, which is how games can be played by email

http://turbulence.org/spotlight/thinking/chess.html This is an online chess computer and it shows you all the moves that it's thinking about and you can see it re-enforcing some choices by the colours of the lines. Pretty cool! Fairly hard too...

I used to have an email version of XCOM: UFO Enemy Unknown - it was fantastic.. it was just an alien crash site mision where one player was the aliens and the other XCOM.

I was thinking of some kind of online game tha tyou could pause rather than postal or gobbeldygook notation...

so, back on.
if anyne fancies a game, i would most highly recommend the IECC or IECG. If you see yourself as grandmaster material IECG ratings are FIDE (the chess equivelant of FIFA) recognised. I'm with IECC, it's free and well organised. games run through the clubs will be rated meaning you will be matched against people of more or less your own strength. Cool.
If not, and anyone on here fancies a game, I'm not available for games just now, but can run you through the basics of pgn which make playing by email a doddle.

love chess, love bridge. the rules of bridge, especial relating to player conduct & etiquette during play, always use to amuse us during our drug, booze and pizza addled all day sessions. Good times :D. I miss them.
