I've recently got a new phone, smarter, than my old phone. I've eaten my 6gb of data allowance which i'd not normally use anywhere near as much of. I appreciate I'll have new phone syndrome. All apps are pretty much the same.

So, like for like, with same usage, would a newer, smarter phone demand more data?

Hmm.

Good question.

New fone might process it quicker, but use moar ? I doubt it.

Unless you’ve not set all the location stuff and associated updates over mobile rather than WiFi..

It shouldn't do as it Apps that use data, not the phone itself.

Check the settings for individual apps. It could be that some have defaulted to be always on or may be using your location at all times.

If it's an iPhone make sure you turn off the sneaky Wi-Fi Assist option. [Settings - Mobile Data - scroll all the way to the bottom]

Android will tell you which apps are consuming data and how much. "Data Usage" page under "Settings".

Android?

My guess is that newer versions of Android and/or the manufacturer's installed software is syncing any pictures or videos you take to the cloud, which is chewing your data.  Often the network provider exempts photo syncing from their data bundle, but perhaps not..

You can find what's been using your data using the 'data usage' thing in settings, if it's Android.  It'll be under 'connections' or you can simply search for settings by name now.

It could be that some have defaulted to be always on or may be using your location at all times

Using your location does not use data, does it?

Data usage can be found on IOS in the same way ^^

If its just the first month that you've used more data could it be things like OS and Apps updating, data syncing and so on? If its every month then something else is going on. Can depend a lot on what apps you use - a sat nav app like Waze or Googlemaps downloads mapping on the go, but NavMii keeps all the maps (for Europe) onboard so that app on its own could hoover up 1GB.

That said on iOS any larger apps wait until you're on wifi to download anything big and protect your data allowance. Don't know if android does the same

Yep first month will be lots of sync and setup stuff, possible some of your old WiFi logins are not synced. But as above look at data usage per app, set warnings and limits and make sure you have sync over WiFi set on the stuff you want (though I think it's the default setting for android)

You decide as big is different for everyone.again I think it defaults to WiFi not mobile unless you change it.

Bigger screen? If so, that'll definitely need more data to fill it.....

"Using your location does not use data, does it?"

It does a bit (on Android) because it has to feed back where you are and what it can see to Google but the volume should be trivial.

Bare in mind new software will also attempt to use mobile data instead of wifi if it thinks the wifi is not reliable etc, you can turn that off on both IOS and Android.

Have a look at the settings and see what has been munching the data.

It does that whether location services are on or off!

If you are watching videos could the new screen be higher definition and therefore using more data?

Is your new phone 4G and/or a higher res screen and do you watch youtube, or similar? Youtube will stream a higher quality version of a video if you have a connection that will support it. So watching "the same video" will be a bigger file if in HD.

Hmm, ok. Ta.

Seems my top 5 are:

Chrome 3.31gb

Google Play 0.96gb

You Tube Music 861mb

Google Play Services 145mb

You Tube 132mb

I'm trying to decide if I need to increase my 6gb data allowance before the next billing period.

Currently on 6gb / 2500min for £9, next jump up is 30gb/2500min for £16.

Chrome 3.31gb

How many mb does it take for each 'we value your privacy popup'? 🙂

How old / un-smart was your old phone? If it was a pre-4g model you might find some site tailor things like image resolution etc to the speed of connection so you might now be getting served more data for the same browsing habits

Mail syncing can chew through data - so I reduce how often the mail client syncs when not on wifi (or possibly at times when I'm usually out of the house)

Well Tumblr is blocking all adult content from 17th Dec so you are going to have to go somewhere else 🤣👍

Recently bought a new phone and it ate into my data like crazy due to all the updates...  About 4gb went within a few hours.

Have now gone through and disabled a lot of apps, but even now am getting notifications that various apps (shazam, Spotify and a few others) are having difficulty running.

Oh, and turn off Google crap like when it asks you if you want to rate the supermarket you've just been to or that tomorrow is going to be 5°C cooler than today.

When I got my last phone I let it download all the updates it needed through night. Unfortunately that night my WiFi went down and it gobbled up all my mobile data too. Settings were altered the next morning so it couldn't do that again, and it's the first thing I do when I get a new phone.

1gb on google play shouldn't ever happen again. 1st rule of setting up a new phone, do it on a wifi connection (updates should default to wifi as well).  I would never download any app using data (unless I couldn't wait) and I'd never download a large file using data ie maps etc (again, unless critical). As above re apps such as  sat navs, choose apps that store the info on your phone rather than using data.

I'd live with it for a few months and see if your usage settles down from initial new toy syndrome (can you buy add on data bundles in the short term?), but you may never go back to your previous usage anyway.

FTFY.

Looking at that usage, I can't help but think the solution is "use Wi-Fi."  I can't envisage any situation where I'd use a gig of data on the Play Store in a month other than by accident.

What are you doing with Chrome to munch through three and a half gig?

Mapping / location is a bit of a red herring I think.  If you're using Google Maps and plan routes before you leave the house then it'll cache what it needs, and even if you don't the data it uses isn't massive.  GPS in and of itself doesn't use any data at all beyond a few bytes to help with an initial lock.

I tend to turn off my mobile data unless Im out and about. Normally I'll use WiFi at home and work.

I'll also set it so that apps normally only update over Wifi.

3Gb could be a month of heavy surfing on here if you aren't P but my guess is that he's not connected to his home WiFi.

You don't need to turn it off, it'll use WiFi by preference if it is available.  On my Samsung there's a feature to switch to mobile if the WiFi is bad but that's off by default.  They know that mobile data costs money so they don't generally spunk it up the wall unless you choose to.  For example by default mine only updates apps etc over WiFi.

Is it a Huawei, OnePlus or Xiaomi? if so don't worry. It's probably just uploading all your dick pics to a shady server somewhere in the motherland.

Well I've had a look at my last week as I've just rolled over the month,

Chrome about 0.5Gb/Week so 3 isn't bad for a month especially if you are not on wifi at work

Play sounds like you have updated everything over mobile data

Music could well be downloading playlists to the new phone

Once I'm up and running on a new phone I've just been letting it run on whatever network it needs, most of the day or the evening it's on wifi so it covers that fine and happily stay under 6Gb/Month - I tend to end up doing a bit of tethering at the end of the month to use some of it up.

Why, yes it is. You seem to know me so well 😜

Its been set to WiFi only 🙄

but my guess is that he’s not connected to his home WiFi.

Connected to home WiFi, work & BT WiFi App.

I've downloaded GlassWire App to keep tabs on whats doing what - i'll see how it goes.

There have been a couple of lazy mornings in bed watching PinkBike Monday Movies before our timed WiFi kicked in, so that may of munched some data, but i can't recall exact time / dates etc.

I phoned Virgin & have added an additional GB until 12/12/18. The guy was really helpful. I'm gonna keep tabs on usage and decide before 12/12 if i want to pay £6 pcm extra for an additional 24gb.

If you set the Play store to Wi-Fi only then it won't automatically download updates when Wi'Fi isn't available. However if you go to the app and manually tell it to update, it'll do as it's told and pull them over xG regardless.

Fully aware of this. But I tend to find that it'll chew through the battery more, especially if the mobile data coverage isn't the best where you are.
I'm probably a little odd in that I don't need my phone to be connected to data ALL the time with it pinging and beeping away, certainly when I'm out my data and WiFi are usually off.
Plus unless its a WiFi network that I actually trust, I won't normally connect to it. Too much potential for dubious stuff to happen.
