... already got an Xbox one? Enough good exclusives to make it worthwhile?
At lot of the "best game" articles of the last couple or three years have been heavy on PS4 exclusives.
As context, I am increasingly getting bored of the online shooter/loot box stuff - and haven't got time for MMO games like Ark, Elite Dangerous although really like the concept.
I'm looking a left field gaming experience (walking sims etc) and/or something interesting that doesn't require weeks and weeks of commitment and/or has a bit of engaging narrative.
My preception is that Xbox tends towards a more mainstream experience and Sony has some more interesting stuff - or is it just I'm just thinking that the grass looks greener in Sony land, when actually it's all much of a muchness
Enough good exclusives to make it worthwhile?
Yes. I am not stating this as a fanboy for either side, but it's demonstrably true that Sony has more exclusives. This seems to be continuing if E3 announcements were anything to go by (Spiderman, Death Stranded, Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice etc).
Off the top of my head in the last couple of years there has been:
Bloodborne, Uncharted 4 (+DLC), Horizon Zero Dawn, God Of War, Detroit: Being Human, The Last Guardian, Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Yakuza 6 and other indie games I probably have forgotten.
But, I digress, give your requirements, I think get a PS4 and Detroit: Being Human and/or God Of War and you're set. Keep the Xbox to pick up any upcoming exclusives that come out on that platform like Ori 2 and Cuphead DLC.
FWIW, I bought an Xbox One, as skipped a generation, to play the exclusives. After Ori and the Blind Forest and Gears I was more or less done. I think you're right in the assertion that MS do a lot of things right with hardware and the backend, but gaming seems to be all about the big franchises with the occasionally gem like Cuphead/Ori coming through.
Cheers Jamie - that's pretty much what I was thinking - and had looked at God of War and Detroit: Become human bundles.
I even have a spare TV doing nothing as we use Xbox as entertainment hub on main tv
PS4 - birthday present to self...
Also have a go at the PS4 VR if you can.
Played a demo of flying an X-Wing and it made me feel like I was a kid again.
Played Doom VR and almost soiled myself in terror.
What Jamie said
If you want the best games in the world, buy a Nintendo. 🙂
😂😂😂😂
I did. After a PS3 the Xbox one purchase was mostly driven by the wife wanting the Kinect stuff (barely used) and as a big-screen Skype client to family in NZ (used even less).
Picked up a PS4 in January and must get around to ebaying the Xbox. Controller is better, media player stuff is better and the game exclusives are great too. Sony has also been good at supporting the indie studios so the smaller more interesting games tend to get a PS4 release way before Xbox.
Short answer and as per the other responses - yes.
God of War and the Unchartered series are reason enough. Oh, and games such as Hellblade; Senua’s Sacrifice.
Then you can relive your youth with Wipeout: Omega Collection. Still easily the best soundtrack of all time and such good fun.
Cheers - looking for best deal as we speak...
Not many deals on at the mo for some reason. John Lewis got a white 500GB slim for £249 with GoW.
Thanks Jamie - I got the same deal at Curry's which is more convenient for me to pick up tomorrow morning. New toy Saturday!
No.
The big names can be available on both.
Buy a musical instrument instead. Get good at that and get into a band.
PS/Xbs come and go.
I hardly play my 4Pro but did like Horizon Zero Dawn.
I play guitar, paint, ride bikes, climb, surf, cook. I also game - these things are not mutually exclusive.
It helps I work flexibly and don't watch much TV!
Purely for the Uncharted series, yes!!!! I’ve been an Xbox fanboi for years but Uncharted has blown my mind. Uncharted 4 is the best game I’ve ever played. Simple as that really, it’s epic!
I hardly play my 4Pro
Why not sell it to OP then? Y'know, so you can spend more time with your instrument.
also buy The Last of US
it's worth the cost of a PS4 alone.
If you do get a PS4 don’t waste your bandwidth downloading Black Ops 3 from PlayStation Plus. It’s a dirty toilet of a game.
Well I'm PS4'd now. Enjoyable couple of hours on GoW yesterday - and got some Horizon Dawn Zero lined up for today.
I've got a four day ride starting on Weds so the PS4 is something to do whilst I'm tapering 😀 In between the yoga sessions

I would suggest quite the opposite, whilst I didn’t like it at first I’m still playing it - 24 days of play so far : )
Definitely worth a ‘free’ download and if you want some easy kills let me know, as I never get any better!
You’ll love Horizon Dawn Zero!
