Predictably, schnullelieber's thread on Birmingham has led to a whole bunch of people saying how awful Birmingham is and how no-one should ever move or visit there. (Some of the critics have even been to Birmingham!). Birmingham has a bad rep and it's never going to be glamorous.

But is it the worst city in the UK? You decide on this thread. The rules: the place you're slagging off has to be in the UK (UK of GB and NI); it has to be a city as defined here; and, err, it has to be shit.

My nomination: Stirling. Dismal weather, infested by neds ("Big Mags"), convenient for Edinburgh and Glasgow and better than neither, rough schemes and not much of architectural interest in town. Plus points: castle, not far to get out of town, weird uni campus.

(PS: someone else can do the thread for the best city. I'm too much of a misanthrope and cynic to start it!)

For me, I think I have to nominate Peterborough. I visited this illustriuos city many years ago for a regatta weekend. A few of us had the opportunity to go to the city centre on the Saturday afternoon only to find it was CLOSED! NOT OPEN, DESERTED STREETS, SHOPS CLOSED, EVERYTHING CLOSED!!! FFS!!! 🙄

Peterborough is an old roman town is it not? (as are lots of places, but always wonder if they knew what it would be like 2000years later!)

I think you'll find the answer is Sunderland though 🙂

Lived just outside Portsmouth for a few months back in the early 90's found it truly horrible place to go out for a drink etc, horrible atmosphere and not so friendly people, mind I was in a group of about 10 construction workers so not surprising

Pompey's not a bad vote. Went to watch Preston North End play them with some (co-incidentally) Prestonian friends a few years ago. Was spat on before i got a hundred meters from the train station.

Well look at that, i managed to get two of the candidates into one post. (on my only visit to Preston I was refused entry to bloody Tokyo Joe's on the basis of being too scruffy - despite borrowing presentable-people clothes especially. I doubt i missed anything good, but i'll bear a grudge against the town for it anyhoo.)

Manchester. Purely on the basis of the football teams that are based there.

Indecision, indecision...

Based on personal experience:
Bristol
Newport, or
Portsmouth

Newport. Like Peterborough with the accolade of being Britain's most violent town before it was 'upgraded' to a city.
If Dylan Thomas had been alive I'm pretty sure he would have given Swansea a break changed his statement to "Newport is the graveyard of all ambition."

The only thing you missed was your feet sticking to the carpet. You were probably refused entry on the grounds that you were over the age of 16. It did used to have a pretty strict "dress code" though. I think that's changed since it became Lava Ignite.

Peterborough.
I have been there a few times and I'm always left wondering 'What's it for?'
Other places have sometime famous, eg Cambridge has the university, Ely has its eels, but what does Peterborough have? It's just a name just off the A1.

My vote goes for two midlands cities -

Birmingham - Worked all over the place and its the only place I've been shot at. Some scumbag in a block of flats with an air rifle 😯

Wolverhampton - Rubbish traffic, Rubbish shops, and again found myself under threat from locals, one chucked a TV out of his house at us due to the power being off.

I have to visit peterborough for work and tbh it's not that bad.
I'm with the op re Stirling though and I reckon Milton Keynes should get an honourable mention - oh and Sheffield.

Bit harsh on Stirling IMO, there's some excellent biking around there. I would rather live in Stirling than Hull.
PS - Mags has been moved out of town now.

London. No question.

The air is horrible, the water is horrible, it sprawls for miles meaning it takes ages to get out of. The people are unfriendly and everything is too crowded. Put too many rats in a cage and they fight

Sheffield

Seriously?

Parts of it are a bit shit, but on the whole it's a great city.

Of the places I can recall actually being to, Middlesbrough and it's surrounding areas has to rate pretty highly.

I've never been, but I believe S****horpe is supposed to be a bit crap too..

Oh, not a city, but anyone ever been to Merthyr Tydfil - jeez?

Sounds like a generic description for any city, not a specific one.

*possible exclusions may apply, but i'd take some convincing*

Really don't get why people say London, the cultural aspects are enough to make up for all the less appealing things.

Coventry and Hull have the least to off of the cities I've lived in.

Newport - supposed to be trying to win a project there on Monday! Thought there might be some nice cycling to be had nearby?

If you take the criteria beyond the grimness and filth of the city, and take into account the downtrodden miserable attitude of the people, it's hard to topple Stoke from the sludge at the bottom of the shallow end of the gene pool.

To me London =

traffic, takes so long to get anywhere
Pollution and dirtyness
Overcrowding
Expense
Low standard of living (cos most of your pay is spent on a mortgage)
Too far from countryside of high quality
Insularity, is that a word? There is a world outside of London.

Im sorry, but the fact that the national ballet is based in London is not enough to get me live there. So you have the o2, bands usually play all over the UK. London may have more art galleries than say sheffield, but that attracts more toffee nosed morons!

Sorry only my personal opinion.

Just for the record I live in Ludlow, can highly recommend it.

Again stoke is a s***hole, but it is sooo close to quality areas, such as the peaks, cannock, and the motorway for when you feel the need to mix with the ratrace on a Saturday afternoon shopping trip.

You could buy an entire street in Meir Heath for 100k

I be careful. In Swindon's favour there isn't much gang crime or gun trouble that I'm aware of.

If any Swindon locals want to say hello, I'll be easy to spot... I'll be the guy that's wearing his shoes on the right feet.
Edit: that'd be the opposite feet that you've got yours on.

Preston gets my vote though I was under the impression that it was still classed as a town (the biggest in the UK?). either way, it's horrid.

I also resent any suggestion that Manchester should be classed as vile. if you see past the Chuggers and homeless people, its actually much nicer than Liverpool and London combined.

Really don't get why people say London

It's basic jealousy mostly, of the fact that they can't live there and enjoy all that's to be had there.

I mean, look at TJ: a middle-class Englishman living in Edinbugger, but probbly not one of it's nastier bits. 😉 Always comes up with the same crap about London, which is just very blinkered and ignorant tbh.

The air is horrible

Granted, it's not the best, but there are other UK cities with bad pollution, I'd imagine the centre of Edinburgh at rush hour can't be too great. Same with Brum, Manchester, etc etc.

the water is horrible

Actually it's among the best water in't UK, and routinely passes scientific tests with higher ratings of cleanliness than other regions, plus it's got plenty of Calcium in it which is essential for bone development meaning you don't see so many problems related to Calcium defficiency here.

it sprawls for miles meaning it takes ages to get out of

Well, this means it contains very diverse and interesting areas, some of them extremely pleasant; I spect most folk on here would love a place in Hampstead, or Greenwich, or Chiswick, etc. Granted it might not be surrounded by the most beautiful countryside in Britain, but we do at least have 5 airports to take us somewhere warmer, dryer and less spensive than Scotland. 🙂

The people are unfriendly and everything is too crowded. Put too many rats in a cage and they fight

More bullshit generalisation. I and others I know have found the worst attitudes and hostility to be found elsewhere, often in fairly small places. And TJ; do you never visit some of the pubs in certain parts of Edinburgh or Glasgow etc, of an evening? Rangers V Celtic? Ever bin an Englishman in a small Welsh town pub? No, sorry, you're wrong on that one. Come down here, and I'll show you why. We're more tolerant of diversity than probbly anywhere else in't UK.

Too crowded is right though, but that's only cos of all the people coming here cos it's so great. 😀

There are some dire parts of London, without a doubt. But none are worse than some of the worst parts of the UK. And they're still in London, so at least there's that positive aspect.

I can't really slag off other towns, as most places have their positives as well as their negatives, which I always try to see, rather than being blinkered and prejudiced. I like Bradford, but many don't, for example. And I haven't bin everywhere, so won't judge. I'm not a fayn of Warrington, simply because it seems very boring, and lacks any sense of 'soul'. And it smells.

The worst places are probbly those with very high unemployment, lots of deprivation and that. But then there are places like Stevenage, which are devoid of any character. I like a place with a bit of life in it. Give me the filthy, crowded, scary metropolis any time.

It's not a city, although is the largest town in the UK I believe. There are good and bad bits, but tbh, it's as bad as any other of the grim northern towns beginning with B.

Like most things in life it comes down to money, I'm sure that if you have the dosh most places are OK, however if you don't have any money then you will find yourself up shit creek no matter where you live.

In cities like london, manchester and other similar cities, the amount of shit will be greatly magnified.

Cities = pulition and stress, polution and stress = death ❗
That about sums up cities for me 😀

Yeah well I've lived here longer than you, so how about that, eh? And as you say; it's just your onion. Nothing more. My mate Scottish Kev, what is actually from Edinburgh, born and bred, prefers London as a city, even though he is fiercely proud of his home town. He's probbly seen more of it than you have, too.

So you din't have a great experience here. Not everyone will. Why didn't you, actually? But to slag the place off for reasons that apply to every large city in the UK is simply daft. I notice some of the most insular attitudes on here tend to come from those from north of the border (Watford). Funny, that...

I mean, you talk about 'unfriendly', yet I am one of the lovliest people on here and everyone likes me, so proof you are rong. 🙂

So you din't have a great experience here. Not everyone will. Why didn't you, actually?

Actually I quite enjoyed my time in London.

But the negative- being unable to get into countryside without travelling for hours, the lack of views and beauty - most of the time all you can see is the grimy building across the road. Very few open vistas where you can see the horizon, the air was so dirty and the water so foulk. And no random conversations with strangers / unfriendly people.

Have you ever lived anywhere else Elf? I doubt you actually realise how much more pleasant other places can be as you don't have the experience of them.

I have lived all over the UK and in a few other bits of the world

I don't wish to be rude about where other members of this forum might live but Blackpool lacks charm.

On a positive note Bristol and Liverpool are my favourite cities.

I lived in Soho for three years some while back and enjoyed the eclectic buzz of it all. London’s diversity is appealing and as a younger man it was a great place to be but I’d not want to live there now.

Great my city is looking a good candidate for worst - Pompey!
Its not all that bad. Yes, 10 years ago, it would get my vote, but since the development of Gun Wharf, the knocking down of Tricorn centre and the other new developments, its actually not bad at all anymore. We got beaches close by, ferries to France and CI, South Downs+New Forest.

MTB'ing is a bit sh*te though!

My vote would be Swindon, after doing a Scotland to Ports cycle last year and visiting many towns, unanimous vote for cr*p hole was Swindon! Yes, its a town...

Stoke as a city isn't that nice and I live near in Newcastle. But devoid of charatcter isn't true as there's lots of heritage in the area and it's no worse than a lot of other areas where the standard of living isn't brilliant. If you want atmosphere visit the Britannia when Stoke are playing - the loudest crowd in the Premiership by far. Also round the area there are some real gems of off-road riding and I don't mean Cannock but actually local to Stoke.

Have you ever lived anywhere else Elf? I doubt you actually realise how much more pleasant other places can be as you don't have the experience of them.

Where did I say any other places were unpleasant? I din't. I merely mentioned negative experiences in other places I've visited, and have accounts from others who've moved out of London. Notice I'm not commenting on the living experience of any other place.

You just spout a load of opinion as though it's fact though. As for unfriendly people; maybe they just din't want to talk to a miserable argumentative plastic Jock... 😉

Hmm, last random conversation with a complete stranger? Probbly a customer in the offie downstairs last night, about the cricket. Ended up having a can whilst chatting to him. Usually end up chatting to someone or other when I'm out.

being unable to get into countryside without travelling for hours

More bullshit. I can be in a forest within 30 mins of riding from my house. Jump on a train and I can be in't countryside in about the same, or even less. If I get a train from Waterloo, I can go down to Farnborough, for example, meet Poddy and go for a ride. Train takes 35-40 mins, and I enjoy the ride across town, so no issue there. And you might not know this, but there are miles and miles of quite, mainly traffic free cycles lanes and routes criss-crossing the city. Forgot my bike? Ooh, I can hire one to have a little bimble, from conveniently located locations. 😀

Views? I'm afraid mine is obscured by a number of trees, and a Victorian church building with interesting brickwork. 😐

Peterborough is pretty horrible, last time I was there it was pretty much empty everywhere. Miserable place.

I don't like London either though - the idea of maybe having to work there (media industry) is quite depressing to me, having lived in a nice little village all my life.

I lived in Portsmouth for three years and loved it there. I was at uni though so that probably taints ones view. Southsea Common on a sunny day is hard to beat - many a BBQ was had there. Plus summer lasts from April to October.

Is Milton Keynes a city? That was pretty grim when I visited.

Strange. You must have lived in a different London to me. I too have lived from an early age in many cities around the world - so have a good idea of what is good or bad.

Can you get across it quickly? Err well no, it's 800 sq miles. Why is that such an issue anyway. And vistas, some truly stunning vistas - but not right in the city centre, much like your city or any other city. London is one of the greenest city's in the world - more open spaces, parks and trees than other places of its size. Some of the vistas are fantastic. I can also be in open countryside in 15 mins or 25 mins by bike. Take you blinkers off - the record is getting boring.

The unfriendly bit always makes me laugh. Perhaps I'll go to Edinburgh or Glasgow and smile at everyone and try and talk to them....

Such BS.

The vista from the top of my road.. well its about 25 miles on a clear day - which it mostly is..

All that concrete..

Thats correct - want to get out into the countryside from london you cannot. Teh urban and suburban area is so huge.

Where is that pic? inside the M25?

As for

some truly stunning vistas - but not right in the city centre, much like your city or any other city.

Yes Edinburgh has stunning view from anywhere in the city. Really - its one of the most beautiful cities in the world. So actqaully nothing like london. From edinburgh you can see the sea, mountains, hills and beaches.

Defend London on what is is good for but to try to pretend its a green and lovely place is just simply stupid. Compared to any other UK city it simply is not.

For me it's Newport in South Wales, a very backward place, a major city will be London, hated everything about the city, it's depressing hole.

I can go down to Farnborough, for example, meet Poddy and go for a ride

*shudders at the thought of being stranded on a ride with Peter & Fred*

Woteva TJ. Wallow in your ignorance and sneer at most things all you want. That view, if it's an interest to someone so much better than everyone else, is the top of my road - I can give you the O/S details if you want. The M25 is about 15 miles away.

I never denied Edinburgh it's view - I lived there for two years.

And as for your "Thats correct - want to get out into the countryside from london you cannot." What utter shite once again.

You know TJ as most people do, I read your endless posts on stw with amusement - I realised it's all down to you being better, having it better, everything just better than everyone else. Sad really.

You cannot cope with other peoples opinions that fall outside your blinkered views. The wannabe hippy beating the drum to a different beat is so Zzzzz.

I knew you would pop up on this thread.

So don't lecture me of the views from other places - you really need to understand that other people have experiences and opinions. You come out with some good stuff, but let down with some utter shite sometimes.

how did i know this thread was gonna descend into a hood 'ol london bashing

london is what you make of it- it is dirty and overcrowded but unfriendly, not enough green too big, hard to get out of eyc, your living in the wrong place

as usual those who slag of london for being grim display the exact kind of insular ignorance they accuse londoners of
for example the comment 'just coz the national ballet is there' is so silly, its not just the national ballet, is it?

as for scenery' well its not the alps but views from hampstead heath, ally paly etc are awesome and the london skyline is iconic
architecture and history are all around you

and there are countless markets, fresh fish to fetish gear theres nothing you cant buy 24/7 in london!

open space- there are parks a plenty from the west i can be in cwmcarn in 2hrs or get the train to aston for a dh day in 45 mins!

fwiw ive lived in luton/dunstable -hometown
aberystwyth for 3 years at uni- pretty much as isolated as you can get
ashby massachusets in a hut in the woods for 3 months- camp america like aberystwyth but with bears
cambridge for 5 years,- pretty but claustrophobic
london the last 8 years- best place ever!!!!!!

and even though i love it luton is a sh!thole

Can't believe Swindons not been mentioned yet. Granted it's a town but it certainly wretched enough to get a mention.

emsz - are you actually from Gloucester? 😯

Chunky - where is that view - genuinely I am interested.

Of course I can cope with others opinions. However you make two claims that are factually wrong. London is not a green city and it is not easy to get out of.
