Anyone catch this last night? Amazing, thought the sculptures within the eye of a needle were impressive but when he said what he was planning to do next I thought nope- you've gone too far now... but the reveal at the end showed what he is capable of. Absolutely Incredible. Amazing man as well. Although why he doesn't work in a static reduced environment...

It was very very good. For those who missed it, he sculpted a baby out of a fragment of carpet fiber and then placed it inside a hollowed out human hair.  He did all of this by hand.

Just cos you can, doesn't mean you should 😉

Yes, very, His pieces sell for six figure sums.

From a 2009 article in Evening Standard:

He divides his time between his gallery in London and his £400,000 penthouse in Birmingham and coyly estimates his net worth to be "north of £11 million". "Not bad for a boy who was told he would never amount to anything," he grins.

I saw a bit of this, and then thought 'what's the point?' and went to bed.

Thoughts were from the snippet I saw

- he should invest in some proper anti-static measures, and

-the speakers in the room where he was working seemed to be like some kind of ironic statement. He was working on these micro-sculptures with possibly the largest pair of 'horn' speakers in the background I have ever seen!

Hi stumpty01,

Had much the same thoughts as you!

Spend some of that money on anti static mats and stuff. Not sure why he had all that expensive hi fi stuff in his work room.

And the old result was impressive, but not sure why anyone would pay those sorts of sums on something you can't see, unless it's just because you can.

I know Willard fairly well. A nicer chap you will never meet, will take time out to speak to anyone who is interested in his work. No matter what he's doing.

Unfortunately people have taken advantage of his naivety in the past.

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought it was probably Willard. I knew him in the early 90's when I lived in brum and he used to come into the Pizza hut I worked in!  That was well before he was famous and his methods were not quite as refined - he was such a nice bloke and he gave me and the manager a sculpture of ourselves each......needless to say I have lost it which is a real shame.

Wow, imagine how loaded he'd be if they hadn't!

needless to say I have lost it which is a real shame.

Where did you see it last?

but not sure why anyone would pay those sorts of sums on something <you don’t need, but irrationally want>  just because you can.

doesnt this pretty much sum up almost all human spending habits over and above essentials for life though?

Pretty much, but I'd like to see you ride a mountain bike made by this bloke 😉

I sat next to him on a flight back from the US a while ago. Business class, not First.  So, he's doing ok for himself, but could do better. 😎

Just find a normal piece of rice / pasta whatever and sneer at anyone who says they can't see the art.

Impressive but agree it's odd he doesn't seem to do anything to remove static from his environment. His audio set-up was impressive though, that must be into six figures?

I nodded off a couple of times during the programme though, it didn't actually go much into the process - unless I was asleep it seemed to jump from him hollowing out a piece of his hair to having a finished sculpture with the baby in it (with how he sort of makes his tools in the middle).

So you could say he's made a small fortune.

Much like a friend of mine who set up a bonsai business...
