We've not had a good pedantry / ignorance of language thread for a while sooooooo
Why are build works plural e.g.
Perth & Kinross Council will be carrying out essential road resurfacing works for two weeks in the Bridgend area of Perth, from Sunday 1 August 2021. As a result, motorists are being advised to expect significant delays, to allow extra time if going to appointments via this part of the city, and to follow the official diversions that will be in place during the works.
Shirly it could just be a singular work?
Same for monies and learnings?
(I'll leave signage and cordage for another discussion 🙂 )
works because its in stages? Remove old tarmac, lay new, paint lines?
I have seen both plural and singular used in slightly different circumstances but I couldn't tell you why the differnce. sorry thats not much help.
"we are have having building work done"
"I expect the works to take 3 months"
Same for monies and learnings?
Monies should be used where there are a number of different amounts of money, but it tends to be used as a way of saying 'money' that people thinks makes them sound more intelligent (see, also, 'myself' and 'yourself', rather than 'me' and 'you')
Learnings isn't a word (unless you're righting a bad HR course), because learning isn't a noun, it's a verb, and you don't have plurals of verbs.
Why does learnings become a word if you are correcting a substandard HR course?
*holds head in shame*
😀

When I worked in banking we'd never, ever say "monies", actually in banking you usually says "funds" which was always odd because "funds" can mean a few things depending if you're talking with colleagues or to customers, or whether it's commercial or retail banking. Weird I know.
No, mostly we never said Monies unless it was in a mocking way because yes, the only people who did were those who would say "myself, yourself" etc because either they were pompous dicks, or more likely shitting bricks because buying houses, or when it came to me financing fleets of Vans or buying plant.
I never worked on the retail side, but I did feel sorry for some of the customers, you would hear, usually female, usually young customers talking about "Myself, I need to get my Monies together to give to yourself to facilitate the deposit for my new apartment" when really, anywhere else they'd be saying "I need to get my money together to give the bank the deposit for my new flat" because they're excited, nervous, stressed FTBers.
Sometimes "monies" was just when customers felt it was too big an amount of money to be just mere Money, it usually crept in about the £10k mark.

I'd agree with this. Work is the whole thing, works are the pieces of it
