Anyone else had to work outside today???
Absolutely “Baltic” it was. Managed to find a balaclava in my locker, unused for many a year. The wind whipped up in the afternoon causing snow/ice to blow about whilst we were working, not nice!!!
-5 @7am on way to work, -1 on way home at 3.30pm. Add in a wee bit of windchill and I reckon it was around -10 where we were working
Fair play fit giving it a go.
We were supposed to be dismantling & removing 2 20m lighting towers today, HiAb driver was keen to give it a go but climbing it to hook him up & then trying to get 9 m24 bolts undone seemed a bit optimistic so we sacked it off.
Bad day in the field beats a good day in the office.
Yup.
Offshore, so work must go on! Icy cold winds don’t make for a pleasant time doing maintenance. And trying to fiddle with small fittings and frozen fingers!
24hr factory process, lots of valves either frozen/seized open or closed and hoppers not discharching required various inventive solutions. Same again tomorrow on the stuff we couldn’t fix today plus whatever goes wrong overnight. Not looking forward to when the thaw comes..... that is usually much worse
Not today
'working from home ' for last 2 days, sadly thawed out washers on car so can look forward to a long commute to harrogate followed by probably frozen pipework in the site cabin, unless the automatic eberspacher thing has worked ok. then on n off outside all day yay! recommend me some warm safety boots please
Carted water to the sheep in the barn, fed the ewes outside a couple of times on the quad (full on blizzard), but other than that have stayed indoors as much as possible. Very much the bare minimum done to survive.
Out for 12 hours today ,right on the coast too -9 all day
6 hours outside in probably the worse conditions I have delivered in luckily I have a van to shelter in and warm up!
Felt a bit thisty in the workshop (its a 150 year old smithy - not big on the mod cons) so opened a can of Irn Bru which was liquid until I pulled the ring pull but instantly turned to slush. Had a bottle of water too which again instantly froze solid as I opened it. Tried to thaw it out be keeping it inside jacket or the afternoon - it didn't.
The very fine snow and wind somehow managed to dodge between the states on the roof - so weirdly the snow was more prone to settling in the workshop than outside

spent 4 hours out wed afto trying to wash hundreds of beer casks, outside in a dutch barn.
Bloody caustic had frozen in all the pipes and valves as it freezes higher than water . Then the floor froze as the rinse water hit it. The pallets were all frozen together intheir stacks. The main water feed pipe split next to the valve body so that needs looking at.
Vans brakes were frozen on as well , the dash read -8 !
Even our electric componants were having a mare and not working properly.
Thermal wellies are the answer to outdoor work in these temperatures, plus I wear waterproof gortex lightweight kecks (Burghaus) to keep the wind off.
Wouldn't be without mine, that and a proper helmet liner and my winter cycling gloves and I'm good to go.
Toasty warm
No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
thats nothing - we've just come out of a week or slightly more of -15 base temp, with wind it went down to -27!
was commuting to work in this...
Bullshit, at least there is weather for which good clothing doesn't exist.
I went skiing, does that count? It was a bit windy so I put my hood up on the chair lift, not easy without dropping either sticks or the glove I had to take off to deal with the press-studs.
No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
Yeah, I used to be dead hard as well.
Went for some tyres on the car today to a garage I'd never been to before, doors wide open & the wind blowing in the workshop.
Those were the days. Not.
About midnight last night I noticed my water was off. A burst water main apparently.
Between then and arising from my cosy bed at 8 some poor sods had dealt with freezing water and blizzard conditions to allow me my morning cuppa. If that was you, then Ta, it's very much service beyond...
Managed an hour and a half trying to undo the damage the storm has done, ridge tile off, postbox blown down, kids playhouse dismantled, fence down, bins everywhere, plastic sheeting and boxes from the farm in the beck, coal bunker upended! My thumbs felt like they were getting a million swarf splinters fired into them so cowered inside with a coffee. Fettle the rest tomorrow.
One of my main guys just didn't fancy it this morning. 50 year old builder who I used to work for 20 something years ago who now works for me so I know him well. Chopping ducting vents out between new buildings and I just said sack it off mate as it was brutal.
Site was quiet so I went up to the housing site to clear some snow for a viewing, took Mrs ws with me and we were both cold within 10 mins, that wind is a killer.
Was out on the railways down in Kent today .Sodding chilly! Had some of that freezing rain which was fun. Better than being at home and not getting paid the last few days though. Turns out Citreon Berlingo vans are a little scary on snowy roads though.

Bad day in the field beats a good day in the office.
You want to find a better office to work in
I remember 'when I were a lad' bout 1986-7 when I was 20-21 in my mechanicing days, fitting a clutch to a Mk 2 Escort, outside, in the snow, in the dark. (it was light when I started!). It was on ramps at the front & axle stands at the back (or vice versa)
My inspection lamp was my only light, it was ****in freezing, but not windy, & I remember gear oil running down my arm & into my overalls/armpit as it dribbled out the back of the gearbox. (they were a bastid cos the bell housing was big & you had to tilt the engine up at the front to clear the bell housing from the transmission tunnel.) Every time I came out from underneath I was crawling around in the snow.
I think that was the last time I cried.
