So,

At work we've got a seating area next to the kitchen with a TV and a Nintendo Wii on it. We've got the game that came with it (Sports Resort), one MotionPlus controller, two nunchucks (long story) and two classic controllers. So basically, we've got a console that can play pass-the-controller 10-pin bowling, and not much else.

I've asked for some more stuff for it. Assuming they say yes, I have no idea what's out there for the Wii that's any good. If it were mine I'd go and get Mario Galaxy or Resident Evil or something, but that's a bit antisocial. What I'm looking for is reasonable two-player / multi-player games that can be played in the back half of a lunch break. Whilst I'm not usually a fan of minigames, the bowling thing has been a bit of a hit here, so more stuff like that might work?

The other thing I was wondering was, is there any value in hooking it up to the Internet temporarily, to download stuff to it? There's no connectivity in the kitchen but I could probably relocate it for a couple of hours if needs be. I vaguely remember there's some sort of emulator to be had which could use the classic controllers, or something? Is there any free stuff to be had or am I on a hiding to nothing?

Suggestions greatly appreciated. Ta.

Yeah, I quite like the table tennis and fencing ones. How does it work two-player, does it split-screen or does someone end up at the 'wrong' end?

Mario Kart is a great time waster

You know, I'd completely forgotten about Mario Kart (probably because I got sick of buying it on Yet Another Format) but that's a really good call, thanks.

I don't think work would stump up for a supply of Burt.

Yeah it goes split screen. You can play up to four players on tennis. It's a good laugh but beware of any light fittings!

I doubt they'll pony up for four controllers, and in any case there's not that much room in front of the tellybox. Sounds a giggle though.

Connect it up for iPlayer?

Then everyone can catch up on EastEnders 😀

If I hook it up to t'intertubes, this is possibly how I'll do it; there's a projector in the lab here. Only problem is, all the cabling is decorated in to the wall so I'd have to raid my Gamecube from home for power / AV etc. It's a faff, in short, which is why I asked before I did anything.

Connect it up for iPlayer?

It'd only be a temporary measure, I'd have to disconnect it again to put it back in the kitchen.

I used to work (at an undisclosed location) where they had a "chill out" room with TVs, sofas, Wii set up on a big projector, pool table and drnks machines.

There were published league tables for pool and the Wii tennis. You were encouraged to use the facility during work time to mentally "refresh".

All this was installed shortly after they announced sweeping redundancies and the eventual closure of the plant. 😯

Bump. (-:

I've had a go-ahead for this and been asked to put together a wish list. I've been told to go nuts and let them veto it accordingly, so this is what I have so far.

3x Wii Controller (+ MotionPlus)
2x Nunchuck Controllers for the above (we already have one surplus)
Mario Kart
Raving Rabbids (1 or 2, the newer ones are pish apparently)
Rock Band 3 or Guitar Hero 5 + two guitars (I'm guessing the drums might generate complaints...!)
New Super Mario Brothers
Wii Fit Plus + Balance Board

Anyone got any other suggestions before I submit this?

(Incidentally - after the earlier discussions I discovered that it has built-in WiFi, so it's now on the Internet, for what good that does).

extra wheels for the controllers when playing mariokart...

if there's any reason to keep kids entertained using the work wii then i'd recommend 'de blob'

That's a point. I thought the 'wheels' were passive bits of plastic, is that not the case?

How would you fare without them? Just tip the controller?

(And, are the new MotionPlus controllers the same physical size as the older ones?)

It sounds a bit mad but Monopoly is quite good on the Wii. You can be a capitalist pig/slum landlord at lunchtime, and foster bitter grievances against your colleagues in the afternoon

For some reason, the games take nowhere near as long as the traditional board game.

Mariokart is always a winner. Oh... and a quick nine holes of golf on Wii sports is always good

once you've used the wheel it all makes sense, you can actually controlling your drifting, which considering it gives you a proportionate boooooost to how long you've been drifting is a huge part of mariokart! not using the wheel means holding the controller weirdly to simulate using the wheel or using the d-pad which is cheating and not what mariokart on the wii was designed for 😀

with the steering wheels... although the cheap versions work fine with regards to the steering experience, they can be a overly tight fit for the wiimote and some have odd fittings to turn the rear button into drifty goodness...

worth paying a couple of quid extra for proper nintendo wheels IMO

Just dance? You have to hold the controller and follow the dance moves on screen. You get points for how closely you can mirror the 'moves'. It'll be an absolute winner with the ladies, who while dancing, can howl along to Abba like a group of cats being fed into a mincer

It offers a fine chance for you to do your aloof "dear god! what are you doing woman" look. And you can't put a price on that

Our work Wii gets turned on once or twice a year, I think using it marks you out as someone with not enough work to do even if you're in your lunch hour so no one bothers :p

I think it marks out your workplace as somewhere I wouldn't want to work. (-:
