I don't want recommendations on brand, necessarily, I need to know where I can go to try them on.
I have wide feet with narrow ankles so many boots don't fit well leading to pain. Places like B and Q have a fair range of boots but they are only ankle high lace up boots and I'd prefer something taller to keep the dirt and mud out as we totally dig up and re-landscape our garden.
Look for some Haix High Liability cold weather combat boots. They are wide fitting, high leg, waterproof and should be anywhere from £40 upwards, second hand from military kit places.

Mole Valley Farmers near you? they should have a big old selection to try.
Just got some Haix XR3 at work and they are narrow at the heel with wide enough at the front. Will probably soften a bit wider with use as I have feet like a duck.
Edit: avoid V12 boots, the heels are like buckets.
Extra edit: think there is an Arco in Cardiff, but they may not be keen for visits trying stuff on.
I think I want rigger boots, don't I?
Are they always lined?
I live in my rigger boots outside work & the bike. Much better than wellies at everything. I was them with walking boot wax to keep them waterproof and in good nick. I got Screwfix ones but they took an age to bed in. I'm sure if you spend more than £30 like I did you can get some that suit and won't need 6 months to get comfy!
Another vote for Screwfix rigger boots.
Cheap enough to work in. And comfy enough to live in.
Wear mine all the time when outside

Having worn rigger boots many years ago (I don't know if they have improved), Buckler Buckbootz wellies are far superior. Walked 10k over rough and very muddy ground the other day on site, with a heavy backpack and my feet were fine. Not sure I'd say the same if I'd been wearing riggers

The OP isn't planning to venture beyond his garden.... but he might have quite a big garden
For trying on.... you'd probably get the best range of options at a branch of Arco. Screwfix and Toolstation would stock reasonable options but they are catalogue shops really (like Argos) - you order from the catalogue over the counter- so they dont really facilitate browsing and trying on especially just now as there's usually a limit of 2-3 customers in the shop and they very much encourage click and collect
A good bet might be to look and see if there are any animal feed / farm supply type stockists nearby - they usually stock a decent range of robust boots.
