OK, i work in a local manufacturing plant, taken on 17 months ago and another chap was taken on at the beginning of this yr after 3 months on agency contract.
At first he was keen, did the work i showed him and generally got his head down etc. Since he's been taken on he's turned into a right soddin' skiver, always stood around gossiping with the 2 apprentices. The three of them have started (in the last 3 months or so) acting like right *****. At first we ignored it, but then they cut out the word 'paedo' from a newspaper and stuck it on a colleagues hard hat - i found it and removed it before he found it otherwise it would have kicked off. Today i found the same word written on the back of my hi-vis vest in big black letters.

Now, do i report this to HR as a case of gross misconduct or do i wait for one of the thick clowns outside the works with a piece of bar in my hands?

I'm fuming, but had the presence of mind to come home and decide what to do when i've calmed down.

I guess you are not their boss? I think that might be one for reporting but maybe have a word with the em first tell them its unacceptable and see what reaction you get.

I guess you are now stuck with that on your vest - swap with his at a minimum

Are you a paedo md? That's quite important. 🙂

Seriously though, has anyone had a quiet word with them to give them a chance to buck their ideas up? We're all eejits when we're young.

I'd go down the bar route, myself, as violence is generally considered, and has been proven time and time again to be, the best way forward in this type of situation.

Mention what happened to other guy the pair of you have a quiet word in their ears, it's up to what you say but I'd not go down the threat of violence route. If it did get a tribunal stage at some point then you're not going to favour well too and they may end up winning thanks to the pettiness of violent threats.

Ask the thick clowns if they only wrote 'peado' on your vest because they couldn't spell peadofile.. oh hang on....

You wanted a serious answer, maybe speak to your line manager or supervisor first rather than going to HR, like Drac says keep it all above board in case it goes any further

Hmm, wrote a long post but the hamsters ate it!

Anyway, they've been warned before by me - quietly as a friendly warning that they've been clocked by others etc.

TBH it's more the fact he (the apprentices are a different dept.) is such a skiver that i'm carrying the load for the same amount of money even though i'm the one who has to set him up on a job etc.

How big a company is it? If small, who knows who? Is there an official route to follow? Will it make you look petty?
A bit difficult to say without more info.

If you have warned them and they have ignored it henits time to report it to your boss - maybe as a "just a heads up" not a formal complaint

Medium sized firm with several sites across town employing several hundred. That's the thing really, ultimately i have to work with the pillocks after.
BUT - the paedo thing is way out of line IMHO. They might think it's funny but mud sticks.

Unexceptable behaviour.
Write a statement of what has happened. Sign it ,date it.Give a copy to you line manager with the hi-viz (PPE).
Get your boss to do what he's paid for.

Take pictures and then report it to the management, then hopefully expect some fireworks.

Mud sticks even when its untrue and malicious.

I'd report it to my boss as bullying but unless you can prove it was someone then its unlikely they will take any action (quite rightly) . The absolute last thing to do is physically challenge anyone as hard as it may be to restrain yourself.

Write 'shirker' on the back of his hi-vis, or just have a word with your boss and get a new one...

The thing is, the idea of me being 'bullied' by a group of kids is laughable, vest is already in the bin and replacement obtained.

It's amazing how a constant drip-drip of irritation can suddenly push you to snapping point, The other chap in our section has been fuming about it for ages now. He's already dobbed the shirker in which is why i'm suddenly on a timesheet so the boss can catch the evidence of skiving - not me but we all have to be seen to be on them.

I told the pillock in question ages ago that if he didn't pull his finger out he'd be down the road - our manager isn't known for his people skills! He just laughed about it. Pity really 'cos he's just moved into a new house with his g/f.

please act now! its funny until the scales tip...

we had a similar situation in work.... few of the idiots kept winding up one of the welders, lovely chap one of the ones that kept himself to himself and works like a dog.... stereotypical gental giant..

one day it all came to a head when they put a load of rocol in his welding helmet, he grabbed one of the guys slammed him down on a table picked him up and held him against the wall and screamed into his face for about 30 seconds, the guy literally p*ssed himself on the spot.

the welder walked out and had about 2 weeks off the poor sod.

its bullying and nothing more, the idiots think its not because its not in the playground.

trouble is even though our place has about 50 people in total theres no HR department so things tend to boil.

"Sadly you dont leave all the children in the playground when you leave school", this moral i got told when i started my apprenticeship many years ago, and how it still holds true, in meaning and actions.

What the hell?!?

Apprentices are supposed to be the victims of practical jokes and piss taking...not the other way round!

I think you need to deal with it now otherwise they'll start stealing your dinner money.

Fill their toolbox with expanding foam filler, or coat the inside of their helmet with engineers blue or grease.

Their behaviour is totally unacceptable and constitutes to "harassment and bullying", technically harassment. You have an obligation to report the incident(s) to your line management immediately.

I've done all that in the past with other work mates - given and received! 😆
They're just lazy pillocks in the main, but the paedo thing is not funny.
