A friend and former colleague has been offered a job in Stirling and is considering moving up from the West Mids and I know we have people living there with the awesome riding. Where would we suggest he should live or look to live? He doesnt ride at all and will be renting at first while he gets to know the place. His partner will be appeased with nice countryside and wildlife, no kids so school catchment etc not important!
Cumbernauld, just doon the road, lovely.
1 response ^ nailed it.
Whit's it cauld?
Dunblane? I have family there who used to work at Stirling Uni. Always seems like a nice place when I visit.
Rental budget will decide whether it's Bridge of Allan or Raploch tbh.
I think there would be all sorts of other factors to consider: is the wife going to be looking for work somewhere? if not what will she do during the day? do they drive? do they have other places to travel to (e.g. back to relatives in W/Mid where a flight or train to Brum matters), will the job involve flights or trains around the country, are the cafe / pub / restaurant types. Access to Glasgow or Edinburgh for range of shops/services, v's access to serious countryside. Budget. Size of house. Garden. Does countryside and wildlife = cairngorms and glencoe or a country park etc...
Dunblane. Simple innit? Well, I made that decision about 15 years ago and not really regretted it since.
We live Dunblane. I work in BofA at Stirling Uni. For us as a family it has been brilliant - great schools, lots of activities, really quick access out to greenspace, all weekly shop done on foot or bike to Tesco and modest high street. It is however (like everywhere) chuffing expensive house wise now, all things relative to where you are. It can/does have a bit of a middle class, what do you mean you don't drive a nice car and ski in Switzerland every winter air at times...But we love it, and don't want to leave. Ride for road and MtB from the door.
BiL and SiL moved to BofA, she works at Uni. Very similar to Dunblane, albeit with a busier road through it and even more on your doorstep. Houses can be even dafter still in price. Arguably even more MtB on the doorstep. Getting across A9 for road rides is required.
Stirling - like all cities it has some really nice parts, and some less nice parts. Still close to riding, even more facilities and more choice of house prices etc. Schools still really good in general (whole of Stirling county is). A touch more effort from some places to get out to greenspace.
Ochils/Hillfoots into Clackmannanshire - can be worth thinking about, houses are cheaper and greenspace to Ochils is ace. Slightly less appealing to us and slightly further to get out to other parts of Scotland (but I am splitting hairs, it is 15-30 mins extra).
Worth thinking about a couple of closer villages such as Cambusbarron (annexe of Stirling, next to motorway), Doune and Deanston (nice villages, it is a commute, fewer facilities by foot but ace bike shop, closer to mountains), Gargunnock/Kippen/Buclyvie - nice enough, commute to Stirling, can be 'dark' in winter due to north slope. Some villages to East and South are OK, but have a bit of a reputation of being 'rough', although all things are relative as we used to live in Toxteth and Sheffield 2/Manor Estate....
To summarise: it is a fabulous part of the world, with amazing riding/walking/paddling on your doorstep, good transport, excellent schools, all the shops/resources anyone really needs, a short train ride to Edinburgh or Glasgow, and quick access to the northern part of Scotland for weekends....It really is ace.
Cambusbarron would be my choice, but (and this will be an issue) a quick look shows pretty much zero available to rent online.
The big advantage of Stirling is it's postion, not a long drive to get to great riding and walking, and fairly near Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Whats your budget? I'm presently drawing a picture of Stirling Castle. It looks nice. Maybe you could live there? 😀
I’m presently drawing a picture of Stirling Castle.
It was floating on it's winter sea of cloud this morning.
Something like this (not my pic!)

Not the same area, but we're moving to Angus this weekend. Just wanted to chip in re renting.
Finding a rental property has been really tough as demand is so high, we could only find agencies to go through, and the hoops with them are many. Never rented through an agency before. Some places we go in touch with a few hours after it was in the market and they already had half a dozen veiwings for the next day. You might need to sig up to all possible avenues for properties with alerts and act very quickly.
Despite photos and virtual veiwings by video we actually had to view the property in person too before they'd let to us. A major issue for is as we're moving down from Shetland so that involved overnight ferries and high cost.
Good luck it's a lovely part of the world.
I'm the opposite side of Stirling to @matt_outandabout and what he says is pretty accurate - Bridge of Allan and Dunblane are very expensive areas in the Stirling area - but they are nice and depending on what you are after are quite likely to offer it.
The outlying villages all have 'character' - they have all been gentrified over the last 20 years and are much better places than before. For most, I suspect they fail as access to services aren't as convenient.
A really nice place to live and the Stirlingshire county is vast, so if we do get another lockdown again and we are restricted to our own country/district then there are still plenty of places to access.
If links to the countryside are up there then Doune, Deanston, Gargunnock, Kippen (basically the westerly villages to Stirling) are all worth looking at. Oh, and Dunblane as others have said.
For Stirling itself Torbrex, Kings Park, or Causewayhead are all worth looking at - but budget will decide that I guess. The beauty of Stirling is no matter where you end up you have countryside on your doorstep. I'm near Cambusbarron and can walk into the centre of town in 15mins, be on the trails at Cambu in 5, or in the Trossachs within half an hour - it's mega.
If a wee drive isn't too much of an obstacle they might want to look into Aberfoyle? Outdoor wise it's properly good. Walking, watersports, MTB, a Gravel mecca, nice village too...
Actually I was up the Wally Mony on local loops this morning, view from there looked like this, v cool

This thread has highlighted that I need to meet up with more local folks for a ride - get into a selfish habit of just going out myself alone with my son or neighbour when time allows, need more commitment!
Anyway, back to OP, as others have said - just about anywhere is fine, it's a wee city, just depends if you want town, semi-rural, rural or up a dirt track style living.
We moved here last year, very much enjoying it. Wasn't there a thing recently about Stirling being the happiest place in Scotland?
My sister in law just moved into Riverside recently. It's a bit of a bawache to get to in the sense that it's pretty much one way in and out but otherwise it's a great wee area. Very tight community, some may say twee, but very welcoming.
@squirrelking - last summer we canoed to the rowing club in Riverside. I was entertained waiting for the shuttle and loading boats by an impromptu doorstep jazz band (nice...). Everyone just came out and stood around chatting with a cuppa / beer for half an hour. Lovely.
Bridge of Allan is lovely but with prices to match. I'm sure other places are nice but probs not as nice. 😛
have a bit of a reputation of being ‘rough’, although all things are relative as we used to live in Toxteth and Sheffield 2/Manor Estate….
I'm down in the Borders, but use to live in Leeds and also near Oxford.
Whenever folk here tell me somewhere is 'rough', I always suggest they look up Harehills, Gipton or Blackbird Leys...
Bride of Allan for the chip shop alone.
Used to commute to Dunblane - good railway service. However living there attracts, how shall I put it, a premium. It really is a lovely place.
Miss working there a lot, never did get that run down the Forth from Dobbies to the Rowing Club after work in.
Thanks all, we faced similar problems getting our rental around Kendal with the rental market but thankfully I think he'll be able to work from home at least for a little while while hunting. Will pass on all recommendations to him. I think because he'll continue to pay a mortgage for now it'll be a case of grabbing anything rental wise and then looking at the really good places to buy. If he finds anything I may post back for opinions on the area. I'm only slightly jealous, would be more so if I was still in West Mids myself.
@longdog where you moving to? I’m in Carnoustie if fancy any company for a ride.
@clubby cheers that would be ace when we're settled in. I had been thinking to post on STW for someone to show me the routes. We're actually moving just near Friockheim. I'll PM you. Ta 👍
