It's come to this, asking STW for help finding shoes... Why is it so hard?

I had / have a pair of brown Camper shoes, these are the closest current equivalent:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Camper-1913-Derby-Shoes-Brown/dp/B01BNDZ9OY/

They don't have them in my size, for one. The pair I have also split because my feet are too wide, so ideally I'm looking for something else similar... But everything seems to be brogues, winkle-pickers, retirement-comfort shoes or some ghastly fake tan shade of nasty.

Can anyone offer some insight into where to find something "decent"?

If there’s one person who really is in no position to offer advice on shoes...

Pair of 5/10's let your ability in your job demonstrate your professionalism rather than looking tailored but not having  a clue what you are doing.

I've been really impressed by Levi's boots. So much so, i bought two pairs last time. I also work in that industry

Shoes - black laceups are the only answer.  Brown shoes are for the country and only to be worn with tweeds.  Next!

Work and casual shoes seems to be in two completely different camps to me. Either work shoes are formal, and hence not casual or work shoes are steel toe caps, and hence not casual.

No help to the op sorry.

Solovair or Paraboot if you're feeling flush...

I used to love Ecco boots but recently the quality has dropped right off.

Perchy must actually be lying dead behind the door, it's the only way to explain how anyone beat him to that punchline! 🙂

I wear black Loakes brogues if suited up, and occasionally brown Loakes brogues if smart casual. The majority of the time in the office though I various smartish approach shoes - mostly Merrill at the moment - as they are so comfortable.

I really don't like those Camper shoes although not sure it's for any good reason. Possibly just because anyone I know who wears shoes like that tends to be in their 30's or 40's and still living with their Mum.

Such an outdated attitude that thankfully most of us get to ignore these days.

Black leather lace up shoes for work?  Surely your starting point is a standard pair of Doctor Martens.

See, there's the crux of the issue.

The Campers are possibly nicer in the flesh. They're smart, not too smart, good with jeans or trousers, stylish (maybe it's the camper detail) not flashy, not bus driverish.

Anyway, my tea's on the table and can't upset my mum by being late.

Geography teacher style for investment banker budget.  And there's a market for it?

I look no further than a (decent) chukka boot; smart enough for business wear unless you're properly suited, yet perfectly OK with a pair of jeans for casual wear, and available in a range of budgets if you're snobby.

Our network manager wears those - approaching 60 and lives with his dad.

I have always like Campers but their more casual ones (Pelotas) rather than their proper shoes such as in the link. They really do make some comfy shoes that last well.

I can also recommend Toms brogues. They aren't traditional looking brogues so might fit the bill. I originally didn't think my Twill ones were going to last but they have held up really well.

If you want some shoes that will really last then invest in some Red Wing:

I know they are pretty pricey but you can usually pick them in the sales for about £150 and they will last a lot longer than most.
