Looking for a new work bench for the basement, for general use but want to fit my bench grinder on to it. Anyone got suggestions for what sort of thing will suit? Obviously anything too flimsy won't handle the grinder but I don't know how heavy duty I need to go for it?

Not anything that special required for the bench - the grinder isn’t a heavy item in itself and there’s no jolt or torque when they start and stop. you’re holding the items you’re grinding, not the bench. So ‘not wobbly’ is all that’s required

using a grinder in a basement gives me the jitters though 🙂

Mine has a dedicated shelf because the sparks go everywhere. It discharges onto a bare earth floor... In my basement...

If it’s used with any frequency something like a shelf might be better - a higher surface than a bench top so you’re not stooping. I use mine quite infrequently but put it on top of a crate on top of the bench to get a better height to see what I’m doing and stand more comfortably

If you're not using it absolutely all the time then it's not a bad idea to have the bench grinder on a removable board that you can clamp to the bench. The grinder can then be parked on a shelf or hung on a wall out of the way when not in use to save bench space.

As mentioned a bench might be a bit low for grinding. I have mine on top of a metal storage unit. It's just screwed to a bit of wood. There should be very little load, just vibration and sparks to worry about

That must be some bench grinder 😯 even the big ones are under 30kg.

Look at 2nd hand catering establishments, they usually have steel tables(on steel legs) narrow enough for single machines like mincers and slicers which are 50kg+

I would happily mount my grinder to a workmate to be honest. It's a 1hp one that a multitool attachment on it, powerful enough for everything I need (and much more so than the normal benchgrinder I had before)

But as mentioned above it has an easy start and stop and doesn't vibrate. I have a beefy workbench but have the grinder attached to a wooden block and then mount that block to the workbench with a big G clamp. Means I can have the space on the workbench if needed, as well as move it outside if I need to, although haven't. If you're using it for wood the dust is pretty serious so think about dust extraction or a mask (or both)

I had my previous benchgrinder resting (not clamped or bolted) to a home made workbench and it was fine. Frame made of metal dexion angle iron and 18mm MDF top. That was fine too.
