I am hoping to set up a basic WordPress website for my freelance consultancy work. The site doesn't need to be complicated or have much functionality initially. I have a domain name and WordPress account, but would welcome being pointed to a guide to set up the site which is easy to follow for someone with no previous experience. There appears to be loads of You Tube videos on the subject, but could do with advice on which of the many, or other non-You Tube guides, you would recommend for someone with my limited experience.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help!

Can't recommend a particular resource but I'm a huge fan of books for these sorts of things.  At best they are well thought out, structured and easy to reference and seem much easier to use.  I've struggled for a while with getting some databases up into Azure so just bought a book a few weeks ago and now I'm there whereas lots of searching through the Microsoft documentation and YouTube vids didn't help.

Once you are going then the online stuff is easier to follow

I usually find the books by going to Amazon, searching for the topic I want and then using the 'Look Inside' feature to see if it is written in a language that works for me as well as checking that the index covers the sorts of topics that I want to cover.  I tend to find personally that stuff published by SAMS/O'Reilly works well for me.  I used to be a fan of the 'Dummies' guides and they can be a very quick way of getting up and running but I now find the style annoys me.

But... for Wordpress if you aren't interested in keeping modules up to date or adding anything specific then you might be better with something like Wix or Squarespace that will keep all the security stuff up to date or using a managed WordPress installation where you are limited in the features and themes that are available but where the hosting company does the work of keeping stuff up to date.  It's a bit of a pain and if it isn't your interest then it is something that you don't need to pay a lot to get someone else to look after.

My experience is that you are going to need a couple of plugins and a template - and the self-help videos and pages of the template are as important, if not more, than some vanilla wordpress site.

(I help manage a 400 page site for national charity, with Yoast, WooCommerce and The Events Calendar as our core plugins, plus a complex template).

Even with a keep it simple, show off your business with contact information, don't forget some simple SEO. That includes proper Google and Bing business listings with a logo and image.

Is it wordpress.com or wordpress.org?

https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

If it is .org i would outsource the build, if .com then i built mine with the resources on the site and preferred this as it gave me more control to edit and was cheaper/free.

I found a lot of solid guidance for the .org version on WPBeginner

https://www.wpbeginner.com/start-here/

Nice little bite-sized chunks that are clearly explained and reasonably well linked. Has written as well as video descriptions.

Finding a "Theme" that does what you want is most of the battle.

I've built a few very basic sites - one for my freelance business, a personal blog and one for OpenMTB.

TBH Wordpress seems to be getting more complicated and awkward each time I do one, so if I had to do it again I'd consider an easier option.

Haven't used them, but I see Wix and Squarespace mentioned as alternatives for the less tech-savvy.

Wordpress here as well.

Basic Wordpress.com or your host and domain using Wordpress.org

KISS and basic temaplate, they all need tweaking a bit.

Reminds me, must update mine...lazy dog.

and this the main site for Jo McAllister Arttist and Printmaker. It very easy to add a shop as well using WooCommerce.

PS Where can I find a FSA 38t chainring for my 2016 Giant Dirt-E 😉
