FiL has expressed a wish for some woodworking chisels as Father's Day gift.
I know nothing about such tools - what's a decent mid-range 'brand' to go for?
Marples from Axminster.
Actually, pretty much anything from Axminster at your price point will be good value for that money.
EDIT: I should actually ask, what's your budget as you can get a 4 or 5 piece set for anything from £20ish up to £hundreds...and how experienced a woodworker is your FIL?
Bahco...
"Narex" available at workshop heaven. Not mad money and excellent chisels which sharpen up well.
FiL is a sporadically keen hobbyist. Wife and SiL buying - guess budget is around 50-60 quid. Would rather get a small set of decent hobby kit than a bigger range of lesser tools.
I use either marples or irwin, both would come in a wooden presentation box for about £50 for a set of 5
Depends what he wants to do with them. Carving, turning, cabinet work etc. I like Robert Sorby's stuff but a decent set would be round £100 I'd imagine nowadays.
I'd second the vote for Narex at your price point, I used them on a woodworking course and for the price I think they are hard to beat. I was close to buying them before opting for a set of Ashley Isles which were nearly twice your budget but damn good to use too.

This. Plus Matthew at workshop heaven is a top geezer who knows a lot about decent tools and is very helpful.
Marples will be more than adequate for the hobby joiner. As a carpenter of over 30 years, I have found them to hold an edge well and always a pleasure to use. My folks bought me a set for my 18th Birthday and I am still using them on a daily basis.
And the big plus with Marples are the splitproof handles: The last thing a joiner wants is to lug a mallet around everywhere!
Marples split proof, cheap enough for hobby and exactly what's most professionals use, my set are 28 yrs old!!!
If you have a second hand tool dealer lots of older decent high quality chisels can be very nice. I slowly built up my collection scoring boot fairs and when resharpened they hold their edge really well.

These I would highly recommend, they take a fantastic edge and won't break the bank
Thanks everyone. Set of Marples ordered.
GAH!
Heard nothing but bad things about Marples, not a shade on their namesake since getting bought by Irwin (much like Record vices).
UKWorkshop is the STW of woodwork, thier forum has loads of good advice.
14 day return under distance selling regs apply 😉
Those Bahco 424's aren't supposed to be much cop either, 434's are excellent (until you chip one on a hidden nail 👿 ) but more chippy oriented than actual craftsman.
Workshop heaven could be dangerous 😉 , I didn't know I needed a screwdriver for its nice handles but these look so beautifully made!
