Next project is turning a side return into a store come turbo den

there is already a 2m freestanding wall, and the extensions roof already projects across the gap with guttering running the length.

so I have a 4.5m long by 0.86m high gap I need to fill.  I do not have access from the exterior.

From the old conservatory I have several glazed panels that are 1.95m long and 0.67m wide. So I’m thinking these could be used to pop in the gap with a suitable frame.

Current thinking is I basically make an F type base which I can slot the glazing into and then build the remainder of the frame around it

i know this won’t be easy to maintain, my hope is this area is very protected from the elements so it should last a decent length of time.  I have plenty of preserver and exterior paint to help.  Siliconing the exterior bead is going to be impossible to do the normal way, so thinking I’ll run a generous bead on the glass before it’s pushed into place

Suggestions for improving the rough plan?  Stupid idea?  It doesn’t need to be perfect but ideally it will be as smart as possible.

any links to decent guides worth reading (I’ve read all the top hits on Google and YouTube)

if I can’t get the glazing to work, im just going to buy some plastic cladding and fit to a simple frame,  will cost more and mean no natural light though

Ventilation? Cleaning (it won't stay daylight for long)?

Maybe a fixed wooden louvre at each end, 1.95m glass panel in the centre. Unscrew the louvred panels for maintenance, which will give access to the fixed glazed panel and frame from each end

Hardwood for lower maintenance, if you can run to that, and WBP ply for the louvres

Is this going to add thievery problems to the property? Might need a rethink if so

for ventilation I'll be fitting an extractor on one of the end walls as I might also set up some resin printers for 3d printing for a sideline business.

cleaning the window cleaner guys have this big long poles which will be able to reach along.

thieving is a concern as the one time we had some try the garage they came over that wall.  part of the reason I want to block it in to the roof line so they can't do it again.  maybe net curtains will do it.  I was thinking as the glazing will be at 2m or so it's not easy to look in, and you would have already had to have broken into next door to do so.

if I have to clad its not the end of the world.  just more money and means I've still got panels off glass sat in the garden my wife wants gone 😀

I'm not sure I follow on the louvre suggesting.  off to google

re read.  I get it.  basically a hinged section with vents.  not a bad idea.  glazing is in multiples of 2m so I have 0.5m to infill anyways

hard wood is out if budget really.  if I'm spending I'll probably go composite for hopefully zero maintenence

going to have a rummage later to see if anyone the conservatory beams and seals can be reused.  but as it was a 45 degree roof I'm thinking not

Have a look for dry glazing. Its a system where you fix the glass to the frame using self adhesive double sided foam tape, then use the same tape on wood quadrant to stick and nail from outside. The glass sits on spacers at the bottom with a piece of aluminium strip covering the cill. You can buy ready made extrusions for this bit.

Advantage being its all ventilated around the glass and any water ingress will find its way out, if the cill has a bit of a slope on it= less chance of rot, unlike if you silicon it all in
