I want to replace about 50m2 of horrid fluff-gathering beige carpet with lovely shiny wood. More accurately I want to pay someone else to do it. I am a bit confused about what is meant by "engineered wood" What is this engineering of which they speak? What should I look for when selecting the floor? How much should I expect to pay? What horrible surprises await?

It's fancy ply wood as I understand it.

Yes it is sort of ply, but with thick strips - like 6mm deep so you only get 3 layers in a 12mm thick plank. The top showing layer is much thinner ~2mm.
Like ply each layer is perpendicular so if wood heats / cools / drys then its expansion and warping is restrained by the other layers.
I layed about that area in a weekend - plus time to replace skirting to cover expansion gap. (floating floor)

There are different qualities of engineered wood, the thicker the top layer, the better, as you can sand it more times.
Any recommendations for a good brand?
We have 21mm thick engineered wood, 11mm of ply and 10mm of oak on top. Cheetah Brand from tradewoods. Cheap, looks great and two years later has not moved despite having UFH.
