My wife hates carpet and wants me to remove the carpet from the stairs. The problem is we live in a cheap modern semi. If I just polished the wood underneath we would have endless clomping up and down the stairs. I suspect the neighbours would get pretty annoyed too.
Is there a way to add sound absorption to the stair treads. Alternatively is there a floor covering that absorbs sound but isn't carpet?
Hessian, Coir or Sisal stair runners sound like just the job..

You could use cork tiles cut to size, these are unusual and can look great if done well.
I had same issue. I hate carpet. Stairs were noisy.
Thanks to alot of silicone between tread and the oak cladding these are really quiet.

Do you not find wooden stairs to be lethaly slippy under foot in your socks?
Nope, my old polished stars were , the new oak clad stairs aint , certainly no more slidey than my living room floor which is the same wood.
Thanks everyone. Trail Rat you have busy!
Trail rat, what are those things?
They're Neolithic stones. All the rage in the flooring industry.
So trail rat to avoid banging on the wooden stairs you stand on the stones?
Weight to hold it down to make sure well bonded to whole stair below.
Took photo while it was all drying.
^^^The grain direction of the risers(if made from solid timber), when bonded across it's width into the tread above surely wouldn't allow natural movement? Wouldn't they crack eventually?
Beautiful stairs mind, and handsome stones.
🙂
risers are pinned at the bottom behind the treadplate.
the tread plates are bonded to the existing stair tread but not the riser - the compression of the treadplate on the riser holds it in situe
lots of fiddly cutting but it changed the whole look of the hall.
