You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So I am now quite a way through renovating my house (which has been interesting to day the least) and I need a new floor for my living room as the old boards were either a. knackered or b. used elsewhere in the house.
Sub floor is good, as I've dug it out, installed dwarf walls and a new level subfloor, and for the last 6 months I have been living with a sterling board floor screwed down however as its starting to fall to bits its time to replace it with a decent floor.
So can anyone recommend anywhere they have used to source decent oak flooring/planks?
I've found this place http://www.frenchtimberdirect.com/ which look OK but I am not keen on total randoms due to being burnt a few time sin the last 18 months.
I would also like to have long boards 2M + which seems to count out a lot of wooden flooring, as the room is pretty long and wide, so short planks will look a bit naff.
Our living room floor came from here; solid oak some good long lengths; haven't been able to fault it to be honest 🙂 Though it was random length there were not any ridiculously short lengths.

Can you remember what the shortest length was roughly? Also how thick were the planks?
Elka do some solid oak boards, think they're 130mm widths 18mm thick of random lengths.
I got mine from Howarth Timber if you're in the Yorkshire area but think they deliver anywhere but you might want to check that
I'll go and check; but I think about 2ft. The stuff we got was 180mm wide and 21mm thick.
cool, thanks for the help
Do you have kids? Our small child has wreaked havoc on our wooden floor.
No kids, only a dog.
The floor is pretty big and I want something that can be cleaned easily so that counts out carpet and due to claws etc I am not keen on lino (even posh lino)

It's a lot more feasible to deal with small child damage on solid timber than it is with laminate though...
Have you insulated under the floor? In terms of noticeable comfort it's the insulation that's proved the best investment in our house. Minus several degrees outside and walking around barefoot inside.
No the floor isn't insulated (yet) as I am a bit worried about damp, so airflow has been a huge factor.
I was may'be thinking about wire mesh + loft insulation, however the house was very very wet when I bought it (crumbling bricks due to the damp, every wall plate and lintel was rotted down to dust and 90% of joist ends were completely rotted through) so I am concerned about maintaining airflow even if its at the expense of insulation.
