For years I have wanted a mature tree in my garden, and a birch is nearly my favourite tree.

It has been gutting to watch it come down this morning. 😕

Some things need to happen though - the retaining wall below was unstable, and the tree could have reached the neighbour or our house. The wall and tree root ball moved in high winds. 😯

Shame, was a nice birch that, tall and very unifom shape. Certainly done for the right reasons if you could see the root plate moving.
Re-planting further back?

Massive job next...slow and steady as funds allow.

The hedge to the left is a cut down set of Leylandi - they all need winching out and a fence replacement installed.
The whole bank from below greenhouse up to removed tree is to be built into more even steps, raised beds.
New access steps up, as existing ones are narrow, uneven and wobbly - or steep wet grass...

Oooh silver birch - it burns nicely with a bright flame.

Got a neighbour's mountain ash to cut up this afternoon.

Was the greenhouse there before, or did you just stick it in to give the tree surgeons a challenge?

The green house was there before.

When I bought the house, the garden was so overgrown I could not get to the birch, the green house was buried below 15' tall fruit bushes and the rest of the garden was nettles... We're 18 months in and making head way...

You summon woodburnerists and fob us off with no 'after' pictures?

Disappointed 🙁

McMoonter is on his way.

I was out on my fat bike in the snow on a thinly veiled log scoping ride. I found a nice Scots Pine that had fallen across a trail, I need to speak to the farmer to see if I can liberate it from his frozen stubble field. No ride is aimless 🙂

The smaller birch rounds look beautiful in a woodpile as they season too.
