Help,I'm buying a house, and the valuation says there is evidence of the above, and I should have it surveyed and treated. The Halifax has issued our mortgage offer without conditions, and I've not noticed anything obvious when looking round. Is it likely to be serious, and has anyone any recommendations for pest control/timber treatment people in South Yorks?

If you get an "expert" in it will need treating no matter what.

How olds te house ? Old houses quiet often had the bore holes before the timber became a house. Most woodboring insects like damp wood. Unless your house is damp ill doubt its live if its even there. I had the same on my survey. I phoned and asked where. Chap told me only over the water tank in a cupboard. I checked it it was dormant/dead. Removed the watertank to ensure no moisture.Timber still had its strength and has been fine since. Wont be visible at next survey anyway. Every house on the stree had it show up there in survey - 60yo house.

The surveyor mutters about damp in the valuation, but the house is 110 years old, there was no visible damp in the cellar, which after the winter we've had is remarkable, and thye cellar is the only place the timbers are visible, and the house has been empty for about 4 months. The vendor says nothing showed on his survey when he bought it 5 years ago,so I suspect it's the usual back covering by the surveyor.

Our house has woodworm holes in all the floorboards. Apparently they only like wood above a certain moisture content and once people install CH it dries the wood out so they no longer lay their larvae in it. Personally, I figure the house has lasted over 120 years without collapsing, so I'm not going to worry about it.

Depends if they are still active. We've had a long horn beetle infestation in some furniture and they make a mess.

Yes, we found an Asian longhorn beetle larva in a Chinese sofa. It was the loud gnawing noise that alerted us.
