Local council said they can deliver, 6-7t of hardwood in 3.7m lengths, 300mm diameter for £150 which sounds like a good deal. (as opposed to a single 1 tonne bag of seasoned split wood for £150)

I have the capability of processing this, chainsaws etc, but I cant quite get my head around how much space 6-7t of 3.7m lenghts will take up and if I have the room to store it until I can get it chopped.

Any give me an idea? Stoner, Mcmoonter??

that's a great deal. a "one-tonne bag" full of wood will not contain a tonne of wood - nowhere near that much

Volume of each length will be 0.26 cubic metres. One metre cubed of green ash weighs about 1.28 tonnes (other wood will weigh differently)4 lengths =1.04 m cubed=1.33 tonne I reckon about 20 lengths

A bit less than this? Bite their hands off if it's hardwood.

They never contain a tonne of ANYTHING! Even with sand and gravel they're only about 0.8-0.85t 🙂

Where are you? At that price I might have a load myself, or split a load with a couple of mates

What part of the council do you contact? I'm interested to see if I can do this with my council

A 'tonne bag' seemingly holds more like 200 - 300kg of reasonably dry hardwood, so a tonne is more like 4 or 5 bags in volume.

I paid £210 for this much, about 1.5 tonnes, predominantly of dried beech. It blocked the drive totally...

I think he's pulling your leg if they say thats 1.5t. Theres prob less than a tonne there. but £200 is a fair price for whats there, the best price I get is about £65 for a cubic meter, so £200ish for 3.5cubic m is ok

He says on his site it's 3.2 cu m, barn-stored seasoned. I can get wetter wood locally at £130 per tonne, weighbridged, but the seasoned is better. And I'm not paying for water by weight.

It's illegal to sell wood by weight. 🙂

That's a good price for green hardwood.

Did they say what hardwood it is?

Remember if its oak, it will take a while to season.

@ski - Yes hardwood, mostly beech 'seconds' - spalted, branchwood, forked, that sort of thing. A small amount of ash branchwood, and whatever else got in the way, and defo seasoned.

@Drac - I may still have a weighbridge printout somewhere for 1000 kg.

What is this "pay for firewood" thing?? Is it trendy?
Can't say that it appeals to me. Never done such a thing.

My understanding is that if you are getting green cordwood (lengths like you describe) .... when split down and dried you will get approx two cubic meters per ton.
Green cordwood is often about £40 per ton roadside .... to get 6-7ton delivered for £150 I would jump at it...... if only I could get that near Rugby.

I had 3 tonnes delivered and the pile was around 7 to 8 foot high and wide in a triangle about 8 foot long. £150 for that so your 6 t is a great deal.
