I listened when you said DON'T USE PALLETS

I went to the nearest timber yard had asked what hardwood they had going free / cheap that I could use to practice. They pointed at a pile of assorted wood, mostly about 10cm square and just over 1 metre long. I took what I could carry but when I asked what it was, he just said £30 and took my money.

I have run each post through the Thicknesser / planer to get one good side showing the grain and have confirmed it is definitely wood.

Can any of you be more specific about the type?

I suspect the one on the right end is pine as it went through the planer quite easily and all the rest were noticeably heavier and harder than it.

This could be a fun game. But we need much better closeups.

Early guesses...from bottom photo (from where the photo was taken if someone wants to get smart from the other thread 🙂 )

Left - beech
2nd left - ash
2nd Right oak
4th left could be walnut maybe but that's a big lump and if it is you have lucked out
3rd right could be sepelle maybe or another mahoganoid.

Good work for £30 at today's prices. I really hope normality resumes very soon.

1-10 left to right

1&2: Oak
4&7 seem like walnut (euro not american black). Possibly 8 too.
5 Can't tell if thats a water mark or grain? If water mark oak too.

3,6,9,10 unsure.

I think 6 might be oak too but marked with water or a mix of heart and green woods

Looking on a phone isn't ideal but I'd say (from L-R) Oak, Oak, Oak, Sapele (Meranti maybe?), Oak, Iroko, Sapele, Sapele, Generic Softwood, Generic Softwood. Look like some reused kickers. Closeups would help though.

Edit - definitely no Walnut in there though unless my eyes are completely shot. Nobody would be stupid enough to give it away at current prices.

5th from the left could be teak. Does it feel oily/waxy?
Edit- and 4th from the right.

Thanks for the guesses so far. I will post up some fresh close ups in the morning.

4 might well be watermarks as I didn't take too many layers off to get the nice surface.
6 does have some soft wood at the end, like the centre of a hollow log.

Now just got to decide what to use and how to make the coffee table I have just been told we need.

Where did you get it from? That might help decipher what it is!

Totton Timber - the local timber yard. The recycling place down the Itchen Bridge is mostly pallets and scaffold boards at the moment and not cheap for those

If you have iroko with your track record I would just burn it.
Nice score for just 30 pounds.
Need better photos of the end grain too

I can't help but a tip for running wood though a planner.

Apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs but just as with hand planning pay attention to the grain of the wood. Try as best as you can to run the plane such that the blade travel downhill wrt the contour lines of the grain. Not always possible if there is knot.

Again sorry if this is obvious but I am stupid and when I first did this I thought it wouldn't matter as so strong so Sharpe. Lazy mindset.

Given the subject matter, I think the opportunity for a more click-baity thread title has been sadly missed

I'm normally ok at wood id when it's in front of me. Not so great at photos but anyway, here are my guesses.
