Mrs K has changed her plans, so Project Upstairs 2018 has gone from carpet to wood flooring.
Other than what I've thought of - noise downstairs and cold floor on feet out of bed what's the cons? And what to do with the currently carpeted stairs?
Just buy her a nice car instead. Wood floors are so chav is scary. You may as well just move to Essex and be done with it,
We have 3 upstairs rooms ,2 bed 1 bath, with sanded T&G floorboards stained and varnished. Few mats/rugs here and there. Easy clean. It’s cool to touch but not cold.
Wouldn't have it in my bedroom. Infact the bedrooms are the only. Carpeted rooms in our house.
Mix of wood and tiles in the rest.
Upstairs hall is wood. Noise isn't an issue. If yours is a cardboard box new build then your milage may vary
No Victorian, but only several miles from Essex.
Apart from the comfort i see the kids happier rolling around on carpet in thier bedrooms.
I had wood floor in the bedroom of my last house and it was ok. Needed to sweep up a lot though!
Ended up putting carpets down - 100x betterer.
with decent wood flooring it doesnt feel cold at all. You could even put some hot water heating under it if you really wanted.
Also think of your neighbours if you arent detached. Wood flooring can be very anti social. Carpets are better for kids.
Wood flooring is the most antisocial invention in modern history.
Think twice please.
We had enough oak left over from downstairs to do the landing. We decided against as with a little one running about I didn't want her to fall down the stairs.
Not good for noise insulation (in either direction). Wood is great for hallways and dining rooms, prefer carpet elsewhere
We have wood flooring throughout upstairs. 5 beds, landing - its great. Easy to clean, doesn't wear out and we just put thick rugs where we want cosy and thin rugs where we want grip (like top of stairs etc). When bored of rug, change unlike carpet which you are stuck with. Not noisy at all and we have a shocking 80's build which is almost as bad as 90's. Stairs have carpet but soon to be changed for painted and a runner.

is your party wall just back to back layers of wallpaper or something .
From personal experience....barn conversion, wood floors upstairs with insulated underfloor void; noise was a major issue.
Don't live in barn conversion now so.....irrelevant to me.
Victorian houses...noise are a nightmare with wood flooring. Almost unbeaable, especially with kids. I assume you have an unfilled cavity with floorboards on beams, and the whole thing acts like a drum. Don't do it my advice .
Horribly noisy IME.
small bedroom had it in for a while, you could hear every movement and anything dropped /thrown was like a bomb goin off. all carpets upstairs now much better
We have it , as in I ripped out the old cheap carpets and sanded and varnished the floorboards . pros looks ace, very cheap, easy to make good damage ,easy to keep clean , doesn't stain , feels nice underfoot. Cons noise especially train set or scalextrix. Pros noise if crankbrat sneaks out of bed while we are downstairs we can tell.
So far noise is not an issue for us. My mum's is fully carpeted and you can hear the movements upstairs when you are downstairs.
Noise is an issue if you wear hob-nailed boots or run an amateur basketball team upstairs. Otherwise not. Carpet is good for acting as a dust reservoir and soaking up spilled drinks. In general, just ugly.
DrJ +1. Wood throughout for me. Heated underfloor solves the cold and it's much easier to clean with no worries about spills and the like.
If any beds or furniture are on wheels then they might move more.
1950's house.
Im n the carpet for bedroom comfort brigade.
Carpets arent generally noisy with a decent squeek free subfloor. There is no other floooring rated better than carpet for reducing sound transmission
Wood is inherently noisy but footfall can easily be softened when floated over cork underlayment.
Many wish to avoid carpet to help reduce allergens, but youre probably going to end up adding rugs anywaoy.
Decent flooring suppliers will have stair nosing profiles available. Stain to match or matched pre finished. Profiles are pricey though.
We have wood everywhere. Mostly resting on a few mm of decent underlay.
Only time we have a noise problem is when the kids are jumping off sofas/beds or beating the shit out of each other.
Slot cars have never been an issue. Neither have ball games......
Takes minutes to vacuum the place, so the dust isn't an issue. We still generate the same amount of filth, so leaving it sat invisible in the carpet doesn't appeal.
Last house in the UK (fully carpeted) you could here the fleas upstairs farting (until we killed them all).

Hell yeah they are.
Made my own profiles with the router in the end!
Interestingly I found the floor boards alone noisier than the rapture. I hardboarded over the floorboards then cork underlay then 15mm solid oak flooring. Much less noise

The reason you need to sweep up a lot, is due to all the dead skin that you can see, rather than it just getting trapped in your carpet.
engineered wood everywhere in a 3 bed detached house, with just two rugs downstairs.
Easy to keep clean with a cordless dyson, not cold, not notice noise but wood is pretty thick.
A lot more hygienic than carpets I reckon.
We have wood everywhere, carpets are just home for dirt and bugs.
Oak floors don't wear or get as dirty as carpets and are easy to restore without changing it all.
Wood everywhere here too. Started with wood & tiles downstairs - so glad we got rid of the carpet upstairs, just a repository for dust & crap. Wood is warm, rugs are cosy & it's much easier to keep clean. Would never have carpets again.
We had wood floors in our old house for a time and were going to go wood here at least downstairs.
Went carpet instead - feels warmer (although admit that may be psychological) and easier to manage for us.
Wouldn't have wood again.

Perhaps not everybody can be so self righteous and live in a house made of solid granite like you, eh?

I recommend a hearing test.
