I start my volunteering in a few days. Excited but terrified and hope that this is normal!

Good luck CG. You'll love it! I don't do owt like this myself, obviously as I'm a selfish, lazy misanthrope, and my time is very valuable. But I've been reliably informed its very rewarding 😉

Was it Dave who inspired you? 😀

Is that Dave pole dancing?

Nick Clegg - the pole - seems to be missing in the pic. 😉

Good luck at volunteering!
Especially if it involves punching Mr Cameron.
Could you kick him instead?

He's on a very short pole, of the floor mounted variety... 😆

@ CG I think I know who you are..possible light gone on. Did you ride in aid of the Welsh air-ambulance? Had a bad fall the following year at a 4x race?

It'll be fine. 😉

(and if you see Mr. Cameron, stick in a steel toe-cap for me please)

CG - if I'm correct you had a very nice man drive you over to Brechfa in his white pick-up. You remember, ex-smoker, couldn't catch you on the ups.

How did your volunteering go?

No worries CG ( light goes out ). Maybe you could share what you're going to do for some positive support.

These things always turn out for the best. I was thinking about doing some work at the RSPCA..

Get yourself some chocolate.. 😀

All the best.
T.

A little update ... I survived and this is where I have been:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-21967870

My rubbish health has meant that I've found it very hard to communicate with people face-to-face. However, everyone was really nice especially the other volunteers.

In the church there is no heating, nor electricity, nor running water so everything has to be brought in.

There are some really interesting displays and old photographs of how the village looked plus copies of the documents the villagers received from the War Office. Salisbury Plain honey was available to buy, the hives are actually just behind the church.

Am looking forward to going back again. 🙂

Cool, I have been there before. Such an intriguing place - no displays or open buildings when I was there

Hoe often will it be open?

adjustablewench - opening is completely dependent on the MoD, the number of days it's supposed to be open is never actually reached. Only the church and churchyard are open as the rest of the buildings have been taken over for use as a Bosnian 'village'. Quite surreal as the buildings have no windows or doors!

The church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and the Curator has worked extremely hard in making it so interesting.

I'm not religious but feel it's important that we remember the War Office told the villagers to leave their homes and farms at short notice as their country needed them for training purposes. They were never reimbursed for their buildings, land or livestock, just given a few quid to help with their removal expenses. They were never allowed back. A shocking way to treat people!

crikey - thanks for your nice words. 🙂

flippinheckler - no country could survive without volunteers of any kind!

Ooooh, on a lighter note I was serving refreshments. Blimey, the amount of biscuits that some people stuffed in their faces. 😯

😆

I remember going on a ride there with you and Anna. It is indeed a spooky place. That Salisbury Plain honey is very tasty, hope you bought some 🙂

I didn't realise there was a STW meeting there today

@CG well done and I hope you had time to actually enjoy yourself
