I'd like to get some for the house. Have looked at Bose, also Sonos. Any opinions on which are better? Or any alternatives. Techy stuff isn't my thing but i want to be able to listen to music wirlessly via an app, good quality sound etc. I'll probably end up with 2, one upstairs and one downstairs...

Probably go for the Sonos out of those two. Can get a bit spendy unless you're just after the basic play:One version.

Are you looking to just play music from your phone on the speakers? Or looking to use Spotify etc. or get music from a NAS/network drive? A lot of money if you're just going to use it for the former.

Yeah when i said phone basically meant my itunes music library, but i'd like to stream as well if thats the thing to do. Never streamed but willing to give it a go!! I just want the easiest route to play music, with a decent quality, fill rooms with sound etc

I have a couple of JBL xtreme speakers and they sound great.

I have one in the kitchen and one in the lounge if I am in and out both rooms a lot i have them both on and they pair perfectly.

I like Sonos but it's worth understanding how it works, with the app just being a controller and the speaker getting the music over the network. In some ways that's great (no dependency on a particular phone/tablet to do the streaming, swap around at will), in some it's not (you have to do everything within the Sonos app, you can't just bluetooth or Airplay to them).

Love how straightforward they are to set up and use, how well they work grouped, how I can just queue up loads of music and just hit a button on it to stop and start playing rather than needing to dig into the app every time, the really long term support - the ZP80 attached to the hifi is nearly 10 years old, still works perfectly with everything else.

Only things I don't like are the downside above - no straightforward way to take a podcast I was listening to on the way home and continue playing it on Sonos at home. Plus I really wish there was a cheaper version of the Connect for other rooms that already have speakers.

Just to give a differing opinion, I went with the simple Bose option - got one of their bluetooth speakers in the lounge, one in the bedroom. Perfect - really simple setup, but does exactly what i want. Just pair over bluetooth and then it'll link when you turn it on. No need for any specific apps or settings, it just works.

I only use it for music over my phone, so no NAS drives etc though, although i guess it does stream when i'm using apple music.

I'd recommend having a look at Pure's Jongo range as well. They sound really good, are available in different sizes- including ones with batteries, and unlike Sonos you can connect straight from your phone. They connect together on a combination of wifi and Bluetooth and can be arranged as stereo pairs too. I got all mine, including two adapters for existing stereos off eBay. I did my whole house (7 units all together - 3xT6x, 2xS3x and2xA2) for about he price of 1.5 Sonos Play 5s. They aren't quite as good to listen to or as slick to use as Sonos, but they're really good for the money.

Been looking at this myself. Probably going to go down the route of simple Bluetooth speaker rather than Sonos. This seems to get good reviews http://m.richersounds.com/#!/product/mon-s150-blk

Sonos here - is great. Was at a friend's last night and he's just bought a Bose streaming system - I was not very impressed.

Would have gone Sonos play 5 in a heartbeat if it were portable. Took a year researching & deliberating - Rival Turbo X was what I finally bought at a good price on Black Friday.

Quite likely "the best" (if there is such a thing) available in the UK for portable unless you need to chuck it around a bit - prob. JBL Extreme otherwise. If it doesn't need to be loud-loud then the Riva S is a winner at a more sensible price.

Slightly ironically, I haven't been more than a cable's length from a socket anywhere I've used it yet...

I bought a play 5 to replace an old Panasonic mini hi fi that was 10yrs old. Nothing wrong with the old one except I wanted to stream and found airport express to be crap with dropouts.

I like the convenience of Sonos. Easy to setup, easy to stream. I don't like the sonos app. I use Apple Music and like to browse new stuff by genre. You can't do that in the sonos app.

Audio quality wise, I'm not overly impressed. I wouldn't say sonos is better than Bose or any other wireless system for sound. It's easy to use and I've not had one drop out issue as yet.

I will go back to a proper mini stereo (MCR 610 or similar probably) at some point and put the play 5 in the kitchen. Unless you really want streaming and multi room, I'd buy something else.

Had a Chromecast Audio arrive yesterday for the stereo, cearly days yet but very impressed with that, a £30 solution for any room that's already got decent speakers in.

Sonos every time. I have 4 sonos 3s and 10 individual other speakers driven by various connect amps

My nearest neighbours are 500m away!!

I would get the Bose Soundtouch if it were me...supports Bluetooth as well as wifi, and gets better reviews for the sound quality than Sonos

I have a denon one, sounds good. Plays black and death metal with out distortion. Was one of few that I tried that could cope with that kind of music at volume

I went for a Bose SoundLink3

See if you can borrow one a give it a try - I am massively impressed at the quality of sound that it pumps out, and really good bass as well. Mobile too.

Not seen any others to compare, but very impressed by a friends Bose Soundlink, reviews seem to rate it too, very small/portable & great output.

Sonos is hardly the last word in sound quality, but it's plenty good enough. It never seems to fall over during playback and while the app isn't as good as the Sonos/Deezer app it's okay and never fails to connect.

If you prefer, you can now use the Spotify app with Sonos directly, I hope Deezer follows soon too.

I'd absolutely take a pair of 1s or 3s over a single Play 5. They sound much better as a stereo pair.

I'm really impressed by the sound from a pair of play ones. Unless you have huge rooms I think they sound better than a single 3 or 5 plus it's easy enough to separate and move to different rooms when required.

Another vote for Pure Jongo here, I recently bought two T2 models which are like Sonos play 3's. They were Outlet ones so only £40 each and can be set up as a stereo pair or multiroom. The benefit for me is they also work on bluetooth or 3.5mm input so they can work in the summerhouse where wifi is ropey or caravan if away. I intended to put one downstairs and one upstairs but I have them both downstairs with the humax box and blu ray wired in to them so it does tv and music duties in stereo.

If you don't really need multiroom then I would say bluetooth works better than chromecast as chromecast does have it's moments our old Klipsch dock with chromecast is relegated to the bedroom.

Check out Yamaha music cast, really flexible, can get speakers and components to fit whatever you need, plus does more than sonos (I'm replacing my bust amp with a music cast one, will be able to stream vinyl)
