Any recommendations please?
Looking for decent battery life.
Seems a mechanical keyboard is best.
It's to give as a birthday present for my teenage child.
Razer?
Is he already gaming a lot? Mice can be a very personal thing, there's a huge variety and some are better than others for different grips or style of games. For keyboards then yes you want mechanical but then there's the question of key types to use and whether you want to TKL or not (I prefer TKL as it takes up less desk space).
Personally I use either Logitech Gaming, Roccat or Razer mice & keyboards and I don't think you can go wrong with any of those brands but recommending a particular model in their range is like recommending a saddle to someone.

Would you not want a wired connection for gaming?
Previous work had wireless keyboards & mice. They used up batteries pretty quickly, so I got IT to replace with wired ones. Would he want to lose power part way through a game?
Anectdotally, (very) older ones used to do that, newer ones don't. IME, etc.
I had an early Microsoft mouse, you were lucky to get a week out of a set of batteries. My ten-year old Logitech lasts months.
My new Logitech gives me a low battery warning onscreen and can be plugged in to charge via USB whereupon it works like a corded.
I need a recommendation for a mouse that lasts more than 4 months. I’m a CAD jockey so clicking it a lot during the day up to 10 hours depending on how busy I am . I just seem to wear them out. It manifests itself by double clicking when I just want a single.Latest was a Logitech silent wireless one.
Just wondering if a gaming mouse is more robust and how speedily do you need to get for that robustness
Trackball?
Like I said, I got ten years out of what was then a Logitech Nano and I'm not a light user (though it's the keyboard which takes more of a battering). It only died when I dropped it onto the kitchen tiles (which is a story in itself). I replaced it with the MX Anywhere 2 which is ostensibly the same mouse only updated.
For a Brucie Bonus, it's half price on Black Friday for the next two days. At £25 I'm half tempted to buy another as a spare.
I see now there's a 3, but spendy.
The keyboard pictured above can run corded or wireless
I've not used that keyboard but ASUS ROG stuff is generally well regarded and the spec. looks good. The pic is a US keyboard layout but that shouldn't be an issue for gaming
Love my Logitech MX Master 2S wireless mouse. The highest praise I can give it is... it just works, and makes everything else seem a bit unnecessary. The only slight concern I have is it's rechargeable (so once the rechargeable battery goes it's done), but it's been 3 years or so so far and no sign of any problems yet.
From there, I *think* Logitech wireless keyboards may be able to use the same dongle as the mouse (but definitely check); and there are some good Logitech mechanical wireless keyboards, with this https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/best-gaming-keyboard#Logitech-G915 apparently the best according to RPS.
Points to consider if you haven't already: is the keyboard more for gaming or typing out essays, are multi-coloured LEDs desirable or definitely not? This might influence the choice of key types (Blue/ clicky for typing, red/ linear for gaming), and whether you go for something with full programmable LED backlighting
