My USB hard drive I used for Apple time machine backup purposes has died. Again.
I am not very up on tech but I understand that backup hard drives can now be wireless? Looking to the future is it an idea to get a WIFI HD that can be used for Time Machine backups but will also have space to act as a music server which I can then link to my hifi with a suitable bit of kit? If so any recommendations for say 1TB storage? I just want something reliable, doesn't have to be flashy.
Thanks.
Anyone....?
The WD range of smaller NAS drives are worth looking at. Simple to use but you’d need to check Apple compatibility.
Ditto qnap - very decent kit and easy enough to set up but again I’m not clued up on the Apple side.
Plenty that will plug into your router and do back ups via your WiFi. Again not up on any fancy apple requirements, they just work on PC.

That and your choice of streaming service for music though, nice and easy and don't need to be spinning up the drive all the time
Thanks chaps.
Another query, I assume if I have my music stored on the NAS then I need to get a streamer to plug into my hifi. I don't want to use my phone or computer for control though, is there such a thing as a dedicated remote control with a display that can be used for this?

Why not? There is an app specifically to do that, why would you not use it, instead using a third party device; honestly makes no sense to me. All my music is on my Mac Mini, connected to my A/V amp via fibre-optic TOSLink, and I use Remote on my pad or phone to control playback, because they’re both available and in use all the time.
Has your drive actually died? It's far more likely that the USB interface or software has failed.
Take the drive out and plug it into a proper computer.
Synology are reliable Nas drives and on WiFi and will back up too. Can play content on mine with via the wifi DVD or Humax TV box, music or Movies. Optical cable from tv to stereo. Also phone obviously to the stereo with an app and Chromecast. Maybe even to a firestick?.
If you really want to avoid the phone then the best way would be to Google play. Upload to the cloud do play lists via Google home.
These days for music I usually just say "Hey Google play my my Binaural Beats playlist on the stereo". A Google pebble thing and a chomecast audio would be cheaper than a Nas?
Synology NAS, back my Mac up to mine, it stores all my music etc, all backed up to an external usb and important stuff backed up offsite to amazon drive.
they have a great support site.
CountZero - I don't want to do that as I have to unlock my phone/ iPad, open the app, search through menus etc etc. I think all this is a faff and a distraction compared to using a dedicated remote. I am surprised at the lack of products on the market that bypass iPads/ phone apps for playback control.
One that did catch my eye was the Sony HAP S1 with a display inbuilt.... but now discontinued.
