Apart from the bleedin' obvious that winter should be cooler I'm wondering what your inner animal is telling you about the coming winter. Will it be just chilly or will it be a snowpocalypse?

There was 3 leaves on the ground in Hexham on 17th august and 37 leaves on the ground in Rothbury on the 28th August.

This means it will turn cold on the 18th November and last for approximately 24 days reaching temperatures of -13.

Just sayin'

The North Atlantic Oscillation is expected to be negative this year.

This is a strong predictor of colder than normal winters in Northern Europe

But these long term forecasts are notoriously unreliable

I haven't seen the Daily Express front page today, if theres not a story about a single pill that will instantly cure a chronic condition , then theres be a surefire long term weather prediction there.

This is a good place to check for non-hysterical informed speculation on the longer term weather. Loads of interesting bits of info in there and well-worded with regards uncertainty:

He's been saying that we have been having a blocking weather pattern for ages, and when we get established ones they tend to last a long time. And if the blocking pattern stays into winter, we'll get some cold weather, possibly early on too.

The point of the blog isn't to convince anyone, it just talks about weather forecasting and the data that's there. It's interesting, that's all.
