So, me and the litte lady need to renew our travel insurance, and what with the planned trip to Les Arcs in January we obviously need Winter Sports cover.
Doing a quick trawl on Money Supermarket brings back many reasonable quotes, but when I look at the policy wordings I can see that loss of skis etc is covered, but I can't see anything specifically for 'being brought off the mountain in a blood wagon/helicopter in the event of an accident'.
Do I need to get separate insurance for this? I've never really thought about it before, I've just ticked the Winter Sports box and not really checked what that actually covered...
Usually depends on what sort of skiing your doing. Most winter sports policies IME cover you for accidents on the piste and in general the resort will make sure your body gets removed to a place of safety as its bad for business if they leave them around. If you go off-piste then you'll need a policy that explicitly covers that, and if you're going further afield then make sure it explicitly covers mountain rescue.
Insureandgo had the best sports coverage for the money when I last reviewed. Covered slack-country, so you'll be OK! 😉
Just had a look at that Insurandgo one and it's ambiguous about whether it covers search and rescue. I'd get something in writing if you go with this! If you want to be absolutely certain then look at SCGB or BMC or one of the specialists like Snowcard.
Yeah, it was InsureAndGo that I was looking at. We'd only be skiing on-piste, but I couldn't find any reference to mountain rescue/recovery, just cover for ski theft etc.
I know the resort will get me down/to hospital if necessary, but I also know that they'll present me with quite a hefty bill...
'being brought off the mountain in a blood wagon/helicopter in the event of an accident'.
Is that not what the Carre Neige (couple of Euros with your lift pass in France) covers? Once you get to a doctor/hospital then its down to your travel insurance.
Certainly did for me in Chamonix, although that was years ago now. I even got a letter afterwards from them outlining how much it would have cost me had I not bought the cover with my lift pass. It was a big number!
Check out if using a Carte Neige would suit you rather than an add on to an existing insurance.
Should the worst happen, It means you don't have to worry about getting your insurance authorised or paying anything upfront etc. as it's universally recognised.
