Anyone know any good locations to spend 3 or 4 nights in January. Not into snow sports, but we do enjoy winter walking.
Been looking at Krkonoše and liberec area, Karlovy Vary too but unsure where to go.
Ideally looking for a town with plenty traditional restaurants, somewhere we can easily walk to trails or use public transport.
We stayed in Janské Lázné a good number of years ago over Xmas. This was for a skiing holiday but the town is nice and lies quite high up in the mountains. If you like walking what about Bohemian Switzerland? The whole area is geared up for walking and you can go over the border to Germany if you get tired of the standard of service in the Czech Republic 😉
Thanks, I've looked at Bohemian Switzerland, trails around the area look great, we were just unsure as where best to base ourselves. Děčín looks to be quite nice though.
how are you for transport?
Liberec is a decent sized town with a few good hills around, although nothing like the Krkonose. It has a cool big tower up on the hill which is accessible by tram, but you'd have to get a bus up to Liberec from Prague, the trains aren't very good.
Děčín is on the main train line from Prague to Dresden, so is quite accessible, and is at the start of the Elbe valley, which is just beautiful IMO. A short train ride from Decin puts you over the border in Bad Schandau which I've always fancied walking/hiking around - it's such a nice train ride up to dresden!
I haven't really done much walking around either town mind, but they'll both serve you well for traditional Czech food and pilsner 🙂
random thought but consider Poprad in Slovakia too. It has a little electric tram that runs up from there into the hills, and goes to 3 or 4 little towns and ski resorts, so it's really convenient for getting around. In fact you could stay in Tatranska Lomnica which is quite pleasant and on that tram route, but not huge, and then nip down to Poprad when you want a better selection of bars / restaurants.
It's not in Czech Rep but the language is pretty similar!
We're looking into Decin now, easy to get to from Prague and busses up into the park look quite good too. Will have to check out Bad Schandau too.
Great advice on Poprad BTW... We spent 6 nights there last January walking in the tatras after Bratislava for new years and before Budapest for some relaxation! Really easy to get about on the electric train and the mountains were stunning, really good trails too. Shame we're not going back, but just want to try somewhere new.
